Clement Windows has manufactured and installed metal windows and metal doors at a range of exciting refurbishment projects recently, a Central London office block, two hydroelectric power stations in Scotland and a Surrey Convent among them!

The former Uniform Works in London’s Clerkenwell Green was refurbished by Stagg Architects, extending the original 13,000 sq ft building by an additional 7,000 sq ft, with a new roof extension, flexible spaces on the ground and lower ground floors and offices at the upper levels.

Steel windows and doors from Clement’s EB20 range were selected because it was very important that the new fenestration perfectly complemented the industrial aesthetic of the refurbished building, helping to flood each floor with light.  As the building is surrounded by other properties on three sides the addition of so much natural light is a real bonus.  The huge wall of steel windows on one side of the building includes a patterned glass which allows light to enter the building while also providing privacy for the neighbouring properties.

Clement EB20 steel windows were created for projects where a traditional steel window appearance is required.  Designed to replicate the appearance of original or existing windows while simultaneously providing all the advantages of 21st century technology, EB20 windows are manufactured from recycled steel and all the windows in this range have exceptionally slim frames.  The use of krypton filled glass units means this product achieves a ‘B’ Window Energy Rating, thereby complying with the latest energy ratings for replacement windows.  The slimmer insulated glass unit used increases the ‘shadow line’ which enables the replica window to be close in appearance to the original putty glazed windows which some projects demand.

Ben Stagg, Director of Stagg Architects, remarked:

“Clement Windows was selected following a lot of research, and ultimately because they were able to offer the slimmest profile metal sections.  The appearance of the glazing is critical to the whole building design so we worked closely with Clement to achieve the desired appearance, with great success.”

The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme refers to two hydroelectric plants, Bonnington and Stonebyres’ Power Stations, in Clydesdale, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.  The abundant supply of water from the River Clyde continuously spins the power stations’ turbines providing a reliable and sustainable source of renewable electricity.  Combined, they create enough electricity to power over 17,000 homes in the UK.

Recently refurbished by Drax Group, steel windows from the Clement W20 range with genuine T bars were chosen for the category ‘A’ Listed Buildings in order to provide as close a match to the original windows as possible.  A traditional, tried and tested robust window, designed in the 1960s but still in demand today, Clement W20 steel windows may be used in all types of building where strong, durable frames, efficient opening casements and hard wearing fittings are required.  Polyester powder painted in striking RAL 6005 Moss Green, Lodsworth handles complement the new windows with matching peg stays in Antique Bronze finish.

Clement made around 120 steel windows for the projects, including nearly 400 individual fixed lights, but the most beautiful is perhaps the enormous curved head windows on both sides of the buildings, which look spectacular and let in masses of natural light.  Commenting on the project, Drax Group Senior Civil Engineer, Anne Kerr, said:

“We are delighted with the service and quality of windows supplied and fitted by Clement.  The new steel windows fitted in the refurbished building look stunning and exceed our expectations.”

Ladywell Convent is the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) congregation, an international religious congregation of Catholic women.  Situated in the beautiful Surrey Hills, the Convent offers hospitality for returning Missionaries and visitors and is also the site of La Verna, a home for elderly sisters and those who support them.

An extensive refurbishment was recently carried out to the residential and conference buildings on the site ensuring their suitability for an aging group of sisters.  Two new support buildings were also constructed.

Side hung casements from the Clement Standard Metal Window (SMW) steel window range with genuine 12mm flat leads were installed in the new Greccio building, polyester powder painted RAL 9005 (Jet Black) semi gloss with the handles, hinges and peg stays powder coated to match the frames.

The Clement SMW window range is a stylish solution for a number of aesthetically sensitive historical projects.  SMW windows are used primarily for replacement work in Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings, where a suitable geometric match is required and double glazing is not an option.

Windows from the Clement EB20 steel window range with 12mm oval leads were installed in the Staff Building on the site, also painted RAL 9005.

Michael O’Brien from O&D Constuction said:

“Steel windows manufactured by Clement were the right choice because of their close match to the existing heritage windows at Ladywell Convent.  The team at Clement did a great job – they delivered the project on time and there were no issues.”

As these projects show, steel is one of the most versatile materials available for window frames and can be moulded into virtually any shape – when it comes to new steel windows, the only limit is your own imagination!

Clement Windows Group manufactures and installs an innovative range of steel windows, doors and screens, specialising in conservation work for both private residences and commercial projects.  The company also offers a range of conservation rooflights, available from stock or made bespoke to individual requirements, in either a tile or a slate profile.

Newton Wins Again at the National Building & Construction Awards

Newton Waterproofing is proud to have been named a winner in this year’s celebrated National Building and Construction Awards, in recognition of our commitment to sustainability.

Launched in 2019, the awards aim to raise the profile of industrious and enterprising building and construction businesses across the country, recognising excellence in the field.

Taking gold in the ‘Green/Sustainability’ category, which focuses on sustainable projects and their impact on the environment, Newton has been recognised for our extremely successful Recycling Service.

Winning gold in the Green/Sustainability category in 2022 marks the second National Building and Construction Award that Newton has received, and is the 6th construction industry accolade that the multi-award winning Recycling Service has received.

What Is The Newton Recycling Service?

The Newton Recycling Service is the first closed-loop recycling scheme in the UK waterproofing industry. Run in collaboration between Newton and our Specialist Basement Contractors, the scheme actively collects and recycles off-cuts of HDPE waterproofing membrane and the plastic tubs and metal containers that hold our liquid waterproofing products from across the UK, for re-use in the construction industry.

How does the Recycling Service work?

Since 2017, the Recycling Service has evolved into a streamlined and efficient process – from Newton’s warehouse, waterproofing products such as HDPE cavity drain membranes are delivered to our specialist contractors across the UK, who then install them and collect all of the off-cuts and waste in dedicated Newton bags.

Whilst making deliveries of new products to its specialist contractors, Newton collects the full bags of recycling and returns them to the Newton head office on the backload, thereby avoiding creating additional emissions.

Thanks to an investment in an industrial granulator, plastics are then processed in-house according to the type of material, and stored in our warehouse in bulk bags.

Once a large quantity of processed material has been accumulated, the bulk bags are collected by one of the UK’s largest plastic recyclers, who transform all of it into new raw materials, ready for the next stage in its lifecycle.

What Has The Newton Recycling Service Achieved?

According to our fifth annual Sustainability Report, Newton recycled 2.608 tonnes of membrane in 2021 by collecting 126 bags of waste membrane offcuts and used containers. This avoided the production of 2.99 tonnes of carbon dioxide – the equivalent to over 11,712 kilowatt hours of energy.

Overall, since 2017, Newton has prevented 22.67 tonnes of HDPE membrane from going to landfill.

To translate this into more quantifiable figures, 22.67 tonnes of recycled HDPE equates to:

  • Preventing 26.05 tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere
  • Saving 101,833 Kilowatt Hours of energy
  • Energy which is worth a total of £14,633
  • Which is enough energy to make over 3.62 million mugs of tea

Newton Waterproofing’s Managing Director Warren Muschialli comments: “It’s an honour to have been named a winner in the National Building and Construction Awards. We’re incredibly proud of our Recycling Service, and for it to be recognised by the judges must mean we’re doing something right.

“We look forward to developing our sustainability targets further in 2023, and are committed to helping shape the UK’s green agenda and providing sustainable construction by helping combat the industry’s waste problems.”

Recycled Product Range

Newton Waterproofing is completely committed to continually finding ways to reduce our impact on the environment. Whilst the Recycling Service is the hero of our efforts, we also look to improve in every aspect of the company, including our recycled product range.

Working closely with our suppliers, we have added three waterproofing products to our range that are manufactured using recycled plastic, without any negative effect on their durability, longevity or performance.

Timloc Building Products has expanded its extensive roofline  product offering with the launch of InVentive roof tile and slate vents.

The East Yorkshire based manufacturer is one of the UK’s leading experts in passive ventilation for the built environment, providing ventilation solutions for the roof space from the eaves up to the roof ridge and everything in between.

Following significant investment, the building products manufacturer has developed a high-quality, comprehensive range of tile and slate vents manufactured onsite at their production facility, along with over 90% of the vast Timloc product range.

InVentive roof tile and slate vents provide ventilation either directly into the roof space or onwards via a ducted ventilation system. The range has been designed to suit profiled, plain, small profiled and non-profiled roof tiles and slates. There is also a universal tile vent option available that incorporates a self-adhesive alternative lead flashing to fit any tile or slate type.

The impact of a changing climate means the energy-efficiency and indoor air quality of new build and existing homes is of paramount importance. To achieve this, efficient ventilation of the roof space is essential.

The 2021 revision to BS 5250: ‘Management of Moisture in Buildings – Code of Practice’  takes on a whole building approach to managing moisture by taking into account the variable interactions of the building fabric, occupants and services used and their combined impact in order to achieve a better understanding of real-world scenarios due to the changing ways that buildings are being constructed and used.

Timloc’s whole-roof offering, which alongside the new InVentive range includes over fascia, eaves and soffit vents and dry ridge and hip systems, prevents excessive humidity in the roof construction and helps to achieve compliance with BS 5250:2021.

The InVentive range has been designed with all types of merchants in mind. Each roof vent is available in single, multi or pallet quantities so anyone from specialist roofing merchants to smaller general builders’ merchants can order the exact quantity and type they require.

Sam Bishop, Product Development Engineer at Timloc Building Products, said: “Our experience in the industry enables us to develop a product offering that suits our customers, from the logistical advantage of various pack quantities for merchants to the technical assurance and support for roofing contractors.”

Timloc products are independently tested where required to ensure they meet relevant standards and accreditations. The entire product range is designed to comply with all relevant building regulations and NHBC requirements.

The InVentive range is compatible with all major tile and slate manufacturers including Marley, Redland, Sandtoft, Russell and Lagan. There is a comprehensive compatibility chart available from Timloc Building Products and their experienced Technical team is on hand to advise on the compatibility of any tile or slate not listed.

Skyfold has launched a pioneering, fully automatic, moveable wall solution into the UK.

The Skyfold Prisma, which is exclusively available from leading moveable wall specialists, Style, is a new and streamlined glass vertical partition which not only allows light to shine in but does so without the use of any wall or floor tracks, rendering it completely invisible when stored in the ceiling.

“This is a real breakthrough in moveable wall technology from our global manufacturing partners, Skyfold,” said Style’s group managing director, Julian Sargent.

“As a fully automated, acoustic glazed moveable wall that stacks into a ceiling cavity, its slim metal frame, clean lines, and sleek design will add elegance and an abundance of light to a wide range of rooms. We see demand being very strong in the corporate, hospitality, education, healthcare, religious and public sectors.”

Skyfold Prisma’s glass panels combine with a minimalist frame to allow light penetration into otherwise dark rooms and corridors, creating an open plan feel to any area, positively impacting both mood and productivity.

With an impressive 52 Rw dB acoustic rating, Prisma also delivers privacy between divided spaces, allowing confidential meetings, classes, and collaborations to occur simultaneously.

With space always at a premium, the panels of this innovative new partitioning wall cleverly ‘taper’ down into position, making it suitable for restricted areas or where

there is potential for obstructions. Further maximising space, when not required, the partition can be quickly retracted into the ceiling cavity where it is neatly stored, completely out of sight.

Skyfold has announced that Prisma is available in a variety of materials including glass, frosted glass and solid panels, with almost any combination being possible. Solid elements can be finished in fabric, vinyl, paint, laminate or even marker-board, allowing a true showcase feature to be created that is both superbly aesthetic as well as highly functional.

Open up new spaces with glass

Modifying conservation and heritage buildings to meet contemporary requirements is a challenge, especially when additional space is required and it’s not possible to extend or change the original architecture.

Peter Hazeldean, MD of ecclesiastical and heritage glass specialists Ion Glass, recommends looking upwards.  He said: ‘Buildings designed to inspire awe with high ceilings and towers often have more space within the body of the church than room to build externally.  Adding a gallery or mezzanine floor can significantly extend the floor area.

Maximum use of structural glass ensures that ancient stonework and carvings remain visible and that light flow is unimpeded, especially where stained glass windows are integral to the appearance and atmosphere of  the original  building.’

More space to study

St Andrew Undershaft is located in the heart of the financial centre of London on St Mary Axe – a rare example of a city church that has survived both the Great Fire of London and the Blitz.  The magnificent stained glass windows are set high in the walls, providing gentle natural light.

St Andrew’s has become a vibrant centre for bible studies and prayer meetings, arranging small groups throughout the day, seven days a week.  Students come from all walks of life including city workers, university and college students, women’s groups and children with around 2500 people using the centre every week.  More functional space was a priority for the building but hemmed in on all sides by modern buildings and busy roads an extension was out of the question.

The solution is an attractive gallery area that has increased the floor space, provided a separate meeting room that can either be closed for privacy or opened up for additional space; new toilets and disabled facilities.

Frameless balustrade

The gallery is enclosed by a stunning and contemporary frameless glass balustrade which was designed without a handrail so it has no visual impact. People using the gallery have an unimpeded view of proceedings in the church, whilst visitors to the church are still able to enjoy the magnificent leaded windows.

Buildings Manager Tony Thomas said, ‘It was essential for us that we made full use of the natural light and that people could see the window.  We wanted the gallery to be an extension of what is happening within the main body of the church without any visual obstruction.’

The glass installation was undertaken by Ion Glass, who have developed various styles of balustrade to meet different internal and external needs.

Wholly frameless, the balustrade at St Andrews is constructed from 21.5mm toughened laminate glass, bolt fixed to the substrate of the gallery floor with a single row of stainless steel bolts – a unique system developed by Ion Glass for a functional and stylish result.  A white film applied directly to the glass wholly masks the unfinished edge of the floor.  With curved panels at either end it provides a stunning sweep of glass across the whole width of the gallery.

With no visible clamps, posts or a handrail the installation is deceptively simple.  As Peter Hazeldean, commented, ‘It’s the minimalist finish that makes this such an impressive result.  We’re very proud to have developed the techniques that allow us to install structural glass that meets all loading requirements with so few obvious fixings.’

The glass is matched at the rear of the gallery with a straight balustrade across the stairwell and a glass panel to protect the stained glass window.  To avoid any impact on the stone mullions of the window the glass is mounted on spider fixings attached to bespoke stainless steel brackets.

A further curved balustrade at the side of the gallery looks over the entrance, providing visitors with natural light from the window as soon as they enter the building and separating the gallery from the ancient stone arch of the doorway.

‘We’re delighted with the result,’ added Tony. ‘Occasionally more traditionalist visitors to the church have been surprised by such a contemporary installation but it’s here for a purpose.  We needed a functional building that a large number of people can use every day and that’s what we’ve achieved.’

Bell-ringing platform with acoustic glass screen

St Peter’s Church in Dunchurch, near Rugby dates back to the 13th century and the original bell-ringing platform was situated deafeningly close to the bells.  A lowered platform was created to separate the bell-ringers from the bells themselves and to provide an acoustic barrier between the bells and the organ. The design blends with the architecture of the church, in particular ensuring that the beauty of the stained glass window at the end of the nave was preserved.

Ion Glass were commissioned to produce all the glass work for the new platform, including the full height screen, glass balustrades and a protective glass panel in front of the window.

Triple panels of Planar glazing were produced to fit across the apex of arch, fitted into a bespoke stainless channel made to the exact shape of the stonework.   The channel compensates for a 75mm difference between the two sides of the span which were not apparent visually until an accurate template was produced prior to manufacture.

The door to the chamber pivots on bespoke stainless hinges between two side screens which are reinforced by structural glass fins that ensure the absolute stability of the installation whether the door is open or closed.  The stylish handles reflect the shape of the arch.

The balustrade across the front of the new platform was manufactured in 15mm toughened glass, resin anchored into bespoke bracketry powder coated in bronze to match the spiral staircase.

‘We supply all the metal work relating to our glass installations,’ said Peter Hazeldean.  ‘Most installations require something very specific to complement the glass, whether it’s hinges, handles or brackets in bespoke finishes.   The bronze powder coating and unusual door handles at St Peter’s tie  the whole installation together and help blend the old with the new.’

St Clement’s Church, Hastings

A legacy left to St Clement’s church in Hastings was designated to be used solely for internal improvements.  An internal meeting room was designed that would provide flexibility for a variety of purposes from a permanent and accessible base for the parish office to craft fairs, exhibitions and festivals.  The space above the meeting room forms a mezzanine platform, accessed by a staircase to the rear of the installation, maximising the capacity of the church.

Encircled with a glass balustrade that extends down the staircase the whole installation adds a functional, modern capacity to this old-town centre church, opening it up to a much wider community. The glass balustrading on the staircase is bolted into position with load bearing decorative stainless steel bolt fixings, adding a stylish contemporary finish and had to be hoisted onto the platform using a genie lift, which was small enough to use inside the church without damaging the fabric of the building but nevertheless big enough to take the load of the glass.

The whole installation is topped with a beautiful bespoke European Oak handrail (also supplied by Ion Glass) that fits seamlessly all around the upper level and down the staircase.

‘The result looks deceptively simple,’ continued Peter, ‘but the panels around each stone arch had to be accurately templated and the glass cut with a computer controlled water jet for accuracy.  Ensuring that the arch panels could be subjected to the toughening process and that they would subsequently sit in the exact position across the span of balustrade was a challenge for our technicians.  We’re delighted with the result!’

‘Glass balustrades, doors and screens offer the optimum result in so many heritage buildings,’ continued Peter.  ‘Each heritage installation raises different challenges but it’s always a pleasure to work in ancient buildings, bringing new life to old spaces and blending old with new.’

How your roofing specifications can make a positive contribution to sustainability challenge facing the construction industry.

Product specification from an environmental perspective has never been easier thanks to material sourcing, sustainable manufacturing processes, and innovative technology.

The race is on to find the construction solutions to support the nations decarbonisation ambitions. With the Climate Change Committee stating that the UKs 28 million homes contribute around 14% of the countrys greenhouse gas emissions; building better, more sustainable and energy efficient homes must be a key priority.

Marley SolarTile®

Improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock

With targets set out in Part L to reduce carbon emissions in new homes by 31%, it is widely acknowledged there are several ways that this can be met. Currently one of the most cost-effective is to combine an efficient gas boiler or renewable heat pump alongside a solar PV system that can harness the energy creating prowess of the sun on the roof.

To ensure compliance with regulations and mitigate any health and safety risks, factory graded roofing battens that meet BS 5534 and are produced by an established supplier with a recognised third-party certification should be a key part of your batten selection. Each individual batten will be marked to show it is graded to BS 5534, showing the supplier, origin code and size – all of which are minimum requirements to meet the British Standard.

INDUSTRY: Healthcare

CLIENT: Willmott Dixon for Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

ARCHITECT: ADP

PROJECT:

To extend and refurbish the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital’s Emergency Department.

This £14.5 million project included the creation of a new entrance into the healthcare facility to provide the local community with greater accessibility to quality care and critical services.

CHALLENGES:

The main challenge facing Axis and the other contractors onsite was working within and around a live environment with the emergency department remaining operational throughout the project.

To help facilitate this tricky scenario, an internal link tunnel was created to enable the safe movement of staff and patients between buildings for the duration of the works.

SOLUTION:

The design of the doors needed to be perfectly in keeping with fresh, modern, and dynamic overall design of this frontline clinical environment.

Our solution for the doors was our own, award- winning, FLO-MOTION® DOORS – the extra low- friction, manual sliding door system that can be opened and closed with fingertip control.

Our FLO-MOTION® DOORS further fulfilled the brief by helping create bright, light treatment bays with options of good visibility or privacy. To achieve this, we fitted each door with interstitial blinds set within the glass for the visibility/privacy option.

The full width and height glass doors, which we fabricate using extruded aluminium profiles, include a self-supporting ‘goalpost’ frame, and feature recirculating ball guides on a low resistance linear track with damper mechanism.

OUTCOME:

The new, extended, and refurbished emergency department at provides several significant benefits, including:

• A safer, brighter, more flexible working environment
• More space for patients, staff, and much-needed facilities • Greater visibility between staff and patients
• Enhanced patient and staff experience
