The Great Escape – Delta Membranes Basement Tanking Systems

Basement Tanking Membranes from Delta MembranesWhen converting a basement into a home cinema with a military theme for the internal decor, the fact that there is an emergency tunnel attached leading to a World War II air raid shelter, and then out to the garden, only adds to the dramatic atmosphere.

That is exactly what specialist contractor Stuart Barr found itself dealing with at a property in Bedfordshire, and Delta Membrane Systems played a leading role in the story by supplying a wide range of materials and products.

In the original design, the door opening onto the tunnel was to be blocked, and the basement room tanked and refurbished ready for the cinema. However, it was then thought of as an asset to the overall ‘feel’ of what was trying to be achieved, so the tunnel and shelter became an integral part of the project.

The cast list of products supplied by Delta included MS500 – a studded damp proof membrane that can be used on walls, floors and vaulted ceilings. It can support a dry lining, screed or flooring in a wide range of situations.

Delta Membranes Tanking Systems

The membrane is placed dimple-side to the surface, and this allows any moisture to drain by gravity to a channel in the floor, which then runs to a sump and pump device to evacuate the water to the outside.

It is resistant to water and water vapour, and to salt transfer, as well as puncture, impact and loading. The membrane will not be damaged by normal foot traffic during installation, or while laying concrete or screed finish.

Taking a leading role in the project, Delta MS20 is a compression-resistant, durable dimpled sheet made from special high density polyethylene. As its name suggests, this heavy gauge version of Delta MS has deep 20mm studs, and is used where a larger flow rate is required.

Completing the list of membranes supplied by Delta, Delta-PT is a high performance polyethylene membrane which is extruded into a series of studs. These studs create a continuous air gap behind the waterproof membrane.

On the face of the membrane is a welded mesh that allows plasters and renders to bond efficiently to achieve dry and durable finishes.

Delta-PT is watertight, resistant to high a low temperature extremes, and is chemically resistant to acids, alkalis, oil and solvents.

Delta Tanking SystemsThree sump and pump units have been installed at strategic points in the scheme. The Delta Dual V3 Sump Pump units are packaged pump stations designed to collect ground water via perimeter channels or 110mm pipes and/or clear openings to the top of the chamber.

Specifically designed for below ground applications, the pump stations feature chambers made from HDPE and able to withstand hydrostatic forces encountered in applications with high water tables.

Making a cameo appearance was Köster NB1 Slurry –  a watertight mineral surface coating with crystallising agents. Waterproofing layers made from NB1 possess excellent pressure and abrasion resistance, and have been tested in accordance to the potable water guidelines.

At one time, a couple of canoes had been stored in the air raid shelter. There was so much water in the room when it was discovered, that the canoes were floating – which, if nothing else, proved their water tightness.

Harlequin Floors recently announced that the company’s product design data is now compliant with Level 2 BIM (Building Information Modelling) and available online at the NBS National BIM Library, to architects, theatre planners and consulting engineers involved with designing and planning dance spaces.

Contracts Director at Harlequin Floors, Ray Lloyds explains that, “With changes in technology and advancements in the construction industry we wanted to invest in BIM to stay ahead of the game, as more architects use the system which is good news for the future of construction and manufacturing alike.” Ray is quick to point out that “Harlequin Floors has always worked closely with RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects) and NBS, so when they approached us with the prospect of becoming an early adopter of BIM, it was a natural choice for us to keep up with the new technology. In doing so, Harlequin has become the only specialist dance floor company to have its products included in the NBS National BIM Library.” NBS,

Ray Lloyds summed up the initiative by saying, “Government contracts such as schools and local authority projects form a substantial part of our business. Consequently, as a company Harlequin wanted to ensure that when a project is being, specified architects are able to access all the technical information regarding our products and therefore specify our specialist products with ease and confidence.”

Considered as an important strategic move by Harlequin Floors, seventeen of Harlequin’s products are now available as objects on BIM, ahead of the Government mandate which stipulates that from 2016 all public construction projects are to be built using of Level 2 BIM within all parts of the design and build process.

BIM is being viewed as the future of construction processes for working, by managing information in a team environment and enabling everyone to understand a building through the use of a digital model. The digital model holds all the information needed to design, construct and maintain that building. The level of detail in the model grows to reflect the building as it is being constructed and ultimately as it is used. This enables errors and clashes to be resolved in the early stages of the model, saving cost and increasing efficiency.

At the core of BIM is what is termed a ‘BIM Object’. “This is a combination of many things: It is detailed information that defines the product and geometry that represents the product’s physical characteristics. The visualisation data that gives the object a recognisable appearance and behavioural data, such as detection zones, enables the object to be positioned or to behave in exactly the same way as the product itself. There are two primary types of object: component and layered. The component objects are building products that have fixed geometrical shapes such as windows, doors, boilers etc. Layered objects are building products that do not have a fixed shape or size such as carpets, roofing, walls and ceilings.”

Whether working on a new build or refurbishment project, the rising cost of energy means that minimising heat loss is more important than ever. Architects and specifiers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, to meet both legislative demands and the changing needs of homeowners.

A good UD-value (the U-value of the fitted door) is of the utmost importance when choosing products, but builders still face the challenge of achieving high levels of insulation without compromising on style, security or ease of use. What is Cool-phase Hybrid?
Cool-phase is an award winning, low energy cooling and ventilation system that creates a comfortable, fresh and healthy indoor environment that can significantly reduce the running costs of buildings. Cool-phase Hybrid is an innovative enhancement that links high efficiency air to water heat pumps with our natural cooling phase change material system.

The Cool-phase system is a natural cooling system that uses night time cooling to charge thermal batteries which contain phase change material (PCM). The natural cooling system combines the cooling effect of the PCM with fresh air provided by the integral air handling unit of the Cool-phase system to provide low energy ventilation and cooling. For clients seeking such fine tolerance of set point control, the Cool-phase Hybrid system firstly guarantees night time charge of the thermal batteries during peak summer periods but also allows additional top up cooling to be provided during the day. This integration of cooling technologies ensures optimum efficiencies and maintains tight set point control.

How does Cool-phase Hybrid work?
Cool-phase uses a thermal energy store which utilises a Phase Change Material (PCM) combined with an intelligently controlled Air Handling Unit to actively ventilate and cool the building. The Cool-phase system can maintain temperatures within a comfort able zone, while radically reducing energy consumption by up to 90% compared with a conventional cooling system.
The effect of adding thermal mass to a building combined with measures to control internal and external heat loading, can be a very effective method of ensuring that the building meets requirements for thermal comfort. However during a period of hot weather, temperatures will invariably rise over time, as there is no method of actively dissipating the buildup of heat. Therefore the effect of adding thermal mass can diminish over a warm spell, although the building takes longer to heat up during the day, it will also take longer to cool down at night time and therefore not all of that heat may be dissipated by the following day. Unlike passive applications where thermal mass is simply added to a building, the Cool-phase system is able to intelligently control how energy is stored and released from the thermal store, by using a heat exchanger and mechanical ventilation. The heat built up during the day can therefore be released at night and the thermal energy store recharged. When this is combined with the effects of free cooling and night time ventilation, the result is a system that can reliably maintain temperatures within comfort zones while radically reducing energy consumption.

Our advanced control system maximises the use of thermal storage through the use of phase change material, fresh air and high efficiency heat pumps. The Cool-phase Hybrid ensures excellent internal comfort conditions and optimum air quality levels at the most efficient energy use possible.
The Cool-phase system is mounted within the room as a decentralised ventilation system. Each Cool-phase Hybrid unit is fitted with a low pressure heat exchanger within the Cool-phase recirculation module. The control system senses the room temperature, room air quality level and external air temperature, automatically selecting the most efficient method for ventilating and cooling the room.

What is a Monobloc Heat Pump?
The Monobloc heat pump provides chilled water during summer periods and hot water during winter periods allowing additional heating to be provided by the Cool-phase Hybrid system in winter periods. The Monobloc heat pump is fully integrated with the Cool-phase system. Integrated control logic. DC inverter compressor. R410A refrigerant within heat pump module only limits the use of refrigerants. Operates as low as -20°C.

The Monobloc heat pump is connected to the Cool-Phase system via a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is specifically designed and optimised by Monodraught’s engineers for this application and it is integrated within the Cool-phase units. The heat pump can therefore channel chilled or hot water to the heat exchanger inside the Cool-phase
system. The heat exchanger works in conjunction with the Cool-phase’s existing recirculation unit, allowing
air to be supplied to the room or to charge the thermal batteries (PCM), depending on the requirements at a given time.

Precise Temperature Control:This new system allows for more precise room temperature control as it will have the capacity required to achieve a set point temperature with consistency.

Capacity to Achieve Set Point Temperature with Consistency: In cooling mode, the thermal batteries are charged during the night when the temperature drops down. However, during certain times in the summer period, the temperature at night, especially around relatively warm buildings, cannot drop below a certain point and allow for the batteries to be charged. Llanmoor Homes, a family run housebuilder in South Wales, has turned to ACO Water Management’s StormBrixx with man access for the management of rainwater on its Rogerstone, Newport development. With the system being proposed for adoption under a Section 104 Agreement (Water Industry Act 1991) subject to the successful completion of a trial, its ease of access for monitoring and maintenance was key.

 In the past, the overriding principle of drainage on a development was to get rain water off the surface, underground and away into the water company surface water drain or combined sewer, or the nearest watercourse.  However, with increasing urbanisation, plus the effects of climate change, this design culture is no longer valid as the sewer network has become overburdened.  Following widespread flooding in 2007, the Pitt Review recommended better management of flood risk, down to site level. This was followed by the partially enacted Flood and Water Management Act being published in 2010, which intended to implement these recommendations in England and Wales.

There has been much discussion on the implementation of Schedule 3 of the Act, relating to Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), which initially proposed that SuDS Approval Bodies (SABs) would be set up within local authorities and that these would approve, and automatically adopt and maintain SuDS schemes.  However, following public consultation at the end of 2014, Schedule 3 will not be implemented in England as foreseen. Instead, from April 6th, SuDS designs have to be submitted as part of the planning application process and local authorities will only adopt and maintain SuDS that are in public open spaces.  This means that developers need to take steps to arrange transfer of ownership and responsibility, through management companies and the like, for maintenance of SuDS that do not fall under the local authority’s remit – unless the SuDS system is adopted by water companies in more or less the same way that sewers sometimes are.

This therefore puts new demands on housing developers to demonstrate how surface water is to be managed at the planning stage along with ongoing maintenance of the system.

In Wales the situation is different. Some of what would have come into force under Schedule 3 through SABs is being undertaken by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water with sealed geocellular storage being adoptable under Section 104 Agreements.  Through this route, normally a developer would enter into a formal agreement in relation to the adoption of the drains and sewers. Although SuDS are not covered in the Sewers for Adoption document used by Developers and Water Companies, they are being allowed for trial projects in Wales to test different products; ACO’s man access StormBrixx at the Rogerstone site is one example.

Llanmoor Homes has been utilising SuDS solutions on a number of its developments to capture and retain as much water as possible at source and ultimately provide discharges much closer to the undeveloped state. With this attenuation system on its Rogerstone site being potentially adoptable (dependent on a successful trial), the principle of maintenance was key and therefore the system’s access and maintenance ability was paramount in its specification.

The company has utilised underground geocelluar storage systems in the past on several projects but the lack of access was a real issue. For the Rogerstone development Llanmoor Homes had a requirement for 200 m3 of attenuation and was looking to take the use of geocelluar storage to the next level in terms of the monitoring and maintenance. ACO’s StormBrixx system with its man access provision met the project’s exacting needs.  This project is providing the ideal trial for this product where it will be monitored for 12 months. It is hoped it will then become an exemplar project, showing the real benefits of utilising an accessible and maintainable system such as StormBrixx for sites such as this.

StormBrixx is designed for surface water infiltration and attenuation.  Its open cell structure allows easy access for CCTV and jetting equipment, which enables the whole system, including all the extremities, to be inspected and maintained from just a few access points.

Developers also have to consider the design of the drainage in terms of ensuring it is able to cope with extreme events of a higher intensity than the design requirements, in other words designing for exceedance.  Following the guidance in ‘Sewers for Adoption’, the Rogerstone system was designed to receive a 1 in 30 year storm event. Design of a SuDS system for a development will typically need to cope with the Environment Agency preferred 100-year return period plus 20 or 30% climate change, to cope with further weather extremities. Most usefully this is done by allowing temporary surface flooding and developers will need to consider floodable areas and demonstrate safe above ground flow paths.

Newton Systems Used To Waterproof The Royal Courts of Justice

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Stonehouse Basements were commissioned to waterproof a second phase of the Royal Courts of Justice following the success of the waterproofing of the vaulted Victorian arches they undertook a few years ago.



Stonehouse installed Newton 508 Mesh cavity drain membrane to the vaults in the Judges’ Robe Rooms. This required great expertise as the membrane needed to be lapped and sealed carefully to fit the vaulted areas. The meshed membrane could then be plastered to directly.

Newton System 500 ‘Type C’ water management system was very suitable for this project as it is deemed “reversible” so meets strict Listed Building requirements

Complementing its existing range of “ecoair” ventilation solutions, Airflow introduces the new LOOVENT eco fan.

A completely new re-design of the million selling Loovent, the fan features exceptionally quiet, two speed intermittent extraction up to 31 l/sec, or, at the flick of a switch during installation, a choice of five speed, continuous (dMEV) ventilation.
Versatile for portrait and landscape orientation, either recessed or surface mounted, the compact design represents the smallest footprint in its class.

Operating from just 2.8 watts it is economical to run and with a specific fan power of just 0.21 w/l/sec on low speed (0.41 w/l/sec on high speed), it is significantly less than the 0.5 w/l/sec for intermittent flow required by the 2010 Building Regulations.
A low energy, ball bearing, DC motor ensures long term reliability with minimal maintenance making it ideal for Social Housing applications where asset pay back is a priority.

From just 25 d(B)A it is also extremely quiet in operation and perfect for both through the wall and ducted installations. Designed with the same mounting chassis as previous Loovent models the replacement of older versions is quick and easy.
Control functions include user selectable, Delay start option, Timer, Humidity and Motion sensor

LOOVENT eco dMEV models are designed to meet the requirements of SAP Appendix Q, and feature continuous ventilation operation. At the time of installation, a constant flow of either 7 l/sec for toilets, 9 l/sec suitable for en-suites, bathrooms and utilities or 16 l/sec, suitable for kitchens, may be set to meet a whole house decentralised continuous ventilation strategy (d-MEV) for dwellings with a low air infiltration rate. An “On -Demand” boost speed enables rapid ventilation when required.
