Chris Coxon, Head of Marketing, Eurocell looks at two hot style choices in housing.

bp-index-november-2016-bloor-loddiswell-1The most significant trend in windows and window styles at the moment is for premium PVC-U flush sash windows. The life-cycle, energy efficiency and low maintenance arguments have been established for decades, yet extrusion technological developments in the past few years mean that discerning mid- to up-market homebuyers can source engineered quality and high aesthetic differentiation in their windows.

bp-index-november-2016-bloor-loddiswell-3For example, over 50% of Eurocell premium window system sales into new build housing are now for flush sash casement windows. And within this, there are two developments of note. First is colour choice – with leading proprietary systems offered in popular contemporary ‘Fired Earth’-style or heritage finishes such as creams, greys and pale greens, either from stock or made-to-order.

bp-index-november-2016-bloor-loddiswell-2The second innovation is the availability of mechanically jointed flush sash casement windows. Additional precision-engineered mouldings inside the frame remove the need for diagonal corner welds – a distinctive characteristic of standard PVC-U windows.

These new joint details add considerable authenticity to the appearance of the window and enables installers and fabricators to provide a product with the look of timber, while retaining all the optimum energy efficiency and virtually maintenance-free performance benefits of PVC-U. These work well on more traditional house designs, and are also a boon in conservation areas too.

Away from windows, it’s bi-fold doors that have really been capturing the imagination of homeowners. Consistent with the open plan kitchen-diner-lounge layouts that are such a feature of contemporary designs, modern BBA-approved bi-folds are a great alternative to patio doors,

Our PVC-U bi-folds are designed from the bottom up using purpose-made systems, so ensuring that the doors work perfectly for years and years. Our dual track carriage – with rollers at the bottom and security pins in the top track – offers better stability for smooth operation, guaranteeing trouble-free performance for the lifetime of the doors.

In respect of configuration – the size of the doors, and how many panels comprise the opening – a huge range of bespoke options are available. Furthermore, depending on source, they can now also bring additional peace of mind – especially in the Part Q Building Regulations context – as they may also come with Secured by Design status (subject to fabricator accreditation).

grosvenor-final-tormax-1As part of a programme of extensive renovation, TORMAX was specified to install a four-wing automatic revolving door to the main entrance of the four-star Grosvenor Pulford Hotel, Chester.  Blending seamlessly with the eighteenth century building, the new revolving door successfully combines the elegance of a by-gone era with the convenience and welcome luxury of an automatic entrance.  Driven by the technologically superior TORMAX 5201 motor, reliability and smooth operation is assured for many years to come.

tormax-3The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel and Spa has been significantly upgraded since the family-owned, Nelson Hotels, assumed ownership of the property in 1994.  Main contractor on the most recent £1.5m project, HH Smith & Sons of Manchester, has been responsible for the construction of a stunning two-storey reception with new mezzanine floor above.  The impressive external glass wall at the front of the property was contracted to Glass & General Maintenance who worked with TORMAX to deliver a first-class automatic entrance.

grosvenor-hotel1-tormax-2With over 65 years of experience in the design, manufacture and installation of world-class automatic entrances, TORMAX was well placed for this prestigious job.  “Our operators have been engineered for performance and reliability at our HQ in Switzerland,” explains Simon Roberts, MD for TORMAX.  “Incorporating a high-torque motor, the 5201 revolving door drive has been combined with our ‘classic’ profile to create a high quality solution.”

The TORMAX 5201 operator incorporates a technologically advanced programmable logic circuit, allowing hotel staff to adjust all aspects of the door’s operation to reflect weather conditions, as well as changing levels of foot traffic.  This ensures the reception area is kept warm and welcoming at all times by minimising heat-loss from the building.

In addition, a self-monitoring function optimises door performance, automatically adjusting movement in response to factors such as wind resistance or a build-up of dirt for example.  If an emergency should lead to power failure, the Grosvenor’s revolving door can be used manually to ensure unrestricted egress.

“We are absolutely elated with every aspect of the new reception area,” comments Lucy Nelson, Sales & Marketing Director for Nelson Hotels.  “A spectacular central hub has been created in which we can greet and welcome our guests.”

delta-mem-3-victorian-houseDelta are working together with the BRE to demonstrate how the Delta system 500 can be an invaluable contributor to flood resilience helping homeowners limit damage and recover quickly from flooding.

Flood resilience
Flood resilience refers to measures that reduce flood damage to buildings in situations where water is allowed to enter. View case study

delta-mem-1-floods-minister-therese-coffey-flooding-back-in-sooner“Back in Sooner” – Floods Minister Therese Coffey shows Good Morning Britain what features can be installed to restore flood damaged properties and get residents back in to their properties sooner.

‘There are an estimated 5.2 million homes considered at risk from surface, river and coastal flooding. Preventative measures play a key role but given the scale of our vulnerability, we need to think delta-mem-2-proten-services-floodingmore practically about flooding and start to adapt to ‘living with water’ says Stephen Garvin, Director of the BRE Centre for Resilience. So fitting a house with resilient technologies and testing its ability to bounce back from water ingress is the first step on this journey.’ Read more

Keeping mould at bay

As Autumn arrives, now is the ideal time for landlords to protect the internal areas of their properties from mould and blackspot. To this end, Carrs Coatings, who are an NLA Recognised Supplier from Redditch, Worcestershire, manufactures Glixtone Fungi-Shield Anti-Mould & Blackspot Paint which has a 20 years lifespan.

glixtone-replacement-imageUnlike most other anti-mould paints, Glixtone Fungi-Shield is manufactured using a unique combination of biocides bonded to an acrylic resin base. Many other products use an already-made paint and then mix into it a fungicide. This means that not all of the paint will carry the same amount of the fungicide, giving an uneven distribution of the biocide.  In contrast, the Carrs manufacturing process ensures that the special acrylic resins and biocides are both blended and bonded to each other. As a result, every part of the paint has exactly the same amount of biocide, giving a totally uniform distribution. When applied, Glixtone Fungi-Shield will then keep killing spores of mould on contact for up to 20 years. Carrs Coatings says the paint has never failed to provide long-term protection from mould.

Glixtone Fungi-Shield is produced in one of the most advanced factories in Europe, conforming to the international standard ISO 9001 on quality management systems. The company’s tight environmental policy ensures a uniform high quality product is produced with neutral impacts on the environment.

A long-lasting solution to mould

Now is the right time for landlords to think about protecting their properties. Brand Director for Glixtone Nick Hodgetts says that “as the weather gets more autumnal moving into the winter period, tenants close windows and doors and turn up the heating in your properties and their homes.  When there is no ventilation and plenty of moisture, which is created through ordinary activities such as showering, drying clothes, dish washing, cooking and even breathing, mould can remain and flourish in the property. This creates the perfect environment for mould spores to multiply and then the complaints start.  Dwellings with a high humidity level are more prone to fungal attack”.

big-products4-glixtone-1While providing ventilation will assist in reducing problems of humidity and condensation, it will not completely eliminate mould growth. As well as being unsightly, mould is a health hazard to tenants and if health inspectors are alerted, it can develop into an expensive problem.

Glixtone Fungi-Shield is a washable paint which is suitable for any internal walls and ceilings of a property that are susceptible to mould and blackspot. The active biocide in the paint makes it impossible for the mould spores to survive. Carrs also recommends using its sterilising solution to remove any existing mould before applying Glixtone Fungi-Shield.

Use for decorating properties

The paint comes in White or Magnolia as standard in a matt finish, and can be tinted to a pastel shade by Carrs Coatings distributors. It is a high quality acrylic emulsion paint, and is easy to apply with a roller or brush. After five days, the painted surface will be fully washable, making it ideal for use in kitchens, bathrooms as well as bedrooms and living rooms.

This what one Customer has said ….

“As an experienced landlord and owner of a lettings agency, we were struggling to find a decorative solution to the problem of mould, which is usually caused by condensation.  We have tried several products however it wasn’t until we found Glixtone Fungi-Shield paint that we now have a viable cost effective solution that absolutely works.  This paint is now used effectively in the prevention of mould and black spot in all of our properties under management as well as my own.  I would wholeheartedly recommend this product to any end user looking to resolve mould and black spot in their homes”

Cembrit Launches Windstopper Extreme in a Blaze of Glory

Cembrit, the leading roofing and cladding specialist, is pleased to announce the UK launch of Windstopper Extreme – a new sheathing board that is ideal for a range of uses on UK construction projects. To coincide with the launch, Cembrit tested the board to BS EN 1634-1:2015 / BS 476:22 at the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Cembrit is delighted to report Windstopper Extreme passed the test achieving a one hour fire rating.

A sheathing board such as Windstopper Extreme is typically installed behind decorative rainscreen cladding to effectively  ‘seal’ the internal environment of a building. It is an excellent alternative to cement particle board and has, following the successful fire test, proven fire resistance. Simon Mayes, National Sales Manager, Cladding and Building Boards, for Cembrit is sure that the architects, specifiers and contractors will appreciate the wide range of benefits that Windstopper Extreme offers: ‘The performance and versatility of Windstopper Extreme make it a noteworthy entrant onto the UK cladding and building board scene. We were already aware of its excellent qualities as a first class sheathing board and to add the one hour fire test on top of that extends the board’s appeal and application potential.’

cembrit-windstopper-in-use-at-danfoss-universe-nordborgBuilding Regulations and other documentation require building structural elements to provide minimum periods of fire resistance, usually expressed in minutes, which are generally based on the occupancy and size of the building. BS EN 1634-1:2015 / BS 476:22 determines the fire resistance of non-loadbearing elements, such as sheathing boards, of a building construction when subjected to certain heating and pressure conditions. When subjected to a 60 minute fire test, Windstopper Extreme passed with flying colours.

Cembrit Winstopper Extreme acts as a windproof membrane for exterior walls that can absorb and release moisture without affecting the durability, strength or performance of the board.  This very low vapour transmission resistance, enables moisture generated inside a building to pass through to the outside. Insulation can be placed directly against the inner side of the board which is also resistant toward both rot and fungal growth. The Scandinavian heritage of Windstopper Extreme also ensures it can withstand considerable fluctuations in weather and climatic conditions.

From floor slab to floor finish FUSI delivers fully integrated package

SIG Performance Technology, the specialist provider of acoustic, fire and thermal solutions, has launched to market a new intelligent underfloor heating system which combines high quality products with advanced technology to deliver FUSI – a fully integrated underfloor heating package designed to overcome the common challenges faced with the design and installation of traditional wet systems.

sig-performance-technology-fusi-launchBy bringing into a fully integrated package the multiple elements which are required within an underfloor heating programme into a fully integrated package; FUSI provides a single point contact solution which is Part E compliant and offers a number of design, installation and cost benefits.

Managed by SIG Performance Technology from inception to completion, FUSI systems are developed as bespoke solutions in response to specific project requirements. While this Professional Indemnity backed approach offers developers and specifiers peace of mind regarding performance and quality, an accredited network of FUSI installers protects the integrity of the design once on-site. This complete process is managed by the SIG Performance Technology team.

Ideal for luxury, high-rise developments, FUSI removes the need to coordinate multiple trades on-site when installing an intelligent underfloor heating system. Mat Norris, Business Development Manager at SIG Performance Technology, explains: “High tech underfloor heating systems are known to provide excellent thermal performance with equally accurate control. However, as the components span a number of trades, including screeding, flooring, joinery and M&E, there can often be challenges in terms of interfacing on-site and issues regarding a system warranty. FUSI directly addresses all of these. From floor slab to floor finish, FUSI is one system with a single guarantee.”

All FUSI systems are designed using proven solutions from within the wider SIG portfolio as follows: HVAC, Performance Technology Integrated Control Strategy (P-TICS), Underfloor Heating System, Prefabricated Utilities Cupboard (PUC), Acoustic Floating Floor System and wide choice of floor finishes. Specified and procured as a complete system design, FUSI streamlines the supply chain and helps to drive on-site efficiencies through a single installation package.

Mat concludes: “The bespoke nature of the system gives developers and specifiers access to the right performance qualities combined with the most suitable floor finish from an aesthetic perspective. Traditionally this level of design flexibility would complicate project delivery, yet FUSI delivers the ultimate in freedom but with the absolute best in terms of a total system guarantee.”
