Eurocell is working with a unique, not-for-profit window and door manufacturer. Created to provide social value, it is making a positive contribution to its local community and delivering commercial success.

Bradford-based Industrial Services Group (ISG) is a PVC-U window and door manufacturer with a difference.

Originated by Bradford Metropolitan District Council in 1997, it is a social enterprise designed to create career opportunities for local disabled and disadvantaged workers and supply high quality product solutions for social housing, care homes, and hospitals across the Yorkshire area.

However, their roots stretch back much further, with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) establishing a support service to help incapacitated service people returning from World War 1 back into employment.

Having teamed up with Eurocell four years ago, ISG is enjoying commercial growth and healthy not-for-profit revenues that are reinvested into the business. Its success is built on delivering the very best customer experience; one that helps generate repeat business, customer loyalty and, in recent times, the emergence of new prospects in the new build sector.

Darren Shaw, General Manager from ISG commented: “Around half of our workforce has a form of disability or comes from a disadvantaged background. We are an inclusive organisation and offer career chances for many who would be otherwise excluded from the workplace. We tap into their enthusiasm, skills and commitment and it’s rewarding for everyone to see our people develop, gain self-confidence, and go onto thrive in a busy commercial environment.”

The complete solution

Eurocell is ISG’s exclusive supplier of extruded profiles from which the company designs, manufactures, and installs a wide range of window and door solutions. As well as guaranteeing a high-quality PVC-U profile, Eurocell’s technical support team is also on hand to offer advice and guidance around more complex specification issues such as helping to undertake wind calculations on proposed higher rise structures.

ISG’s service offering also includes in-house surveying capacity to ensure that prospective orders are seamlessly managed from initial enquiry to final installation.

Journey to zero waste

And the company is also on its own sustainability journey as Darren Shaw, explains: “ISG is committed to a zero waste to landfill policy which means we are looking to recycle post-consumer waste and PVC-U offcuts rather than simply sending them to landfill facilities.

“This is part of our ongoing journey in addressing our environmental responsibilities and helping play our part in tackling the climate emergency. We recognise Eurocell’s outstanding recycling and sustainability efforts which underpin how it operates, and, together, we will continue to enhance processes and procedures to make a positive contribution to the world around us.”

ISG is making a difference within its local community, both in terms of creating rewarding career paths and delivering a quality-led PVC-U window and door service that is valued, respected and, best of all, in demand.

With the motivation and potential to see the enterprise continue its growth trajectory, the management, and employees at ISG are set to generate further social and environmental value for the people of Bradford.

Jaga UK, designers and manufacturers of innovative, sustainable heating, cooling and ventilation systems, has begun building work on their new, low-carbon facility in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

The UK arm of the global company, headquartered in Belgium, has been based in Ledbury for over 25 years and has expanded steadily during that time. With the growth in the renewables sector, particularly the rise in popularity of heat pumps, the company feels it’s an excellent time to relocate to a new home that fully represents their eco-credentials and enables them to offer new services to customers as well as the wider community.

The company has named the future building ‘Kriekels House’, after the company’s founding family. Jan Kriekels, son of Jaga’s founder, is still at the helm of the company today as CEO and visionary.

Kriekels House has been designed with a fabric-first approach to maximise energy-efficiency and minimise carbon emissions. It will showcase the company’s heat pump radiators and low carbon heating and cooling technologies which will all operate with ground source and air source heat pumps. Electricity will be generated using solar PV and electric car charging points will be available for staff.

The new facility will be home to Jaga’s UK warehouse, offices, and training facilities where they plan to run training courses for HVAC engineers, installers, contractors and consultants. It will be open to students too, enabling them to learn about renewable energy systems, see the technology in action and get hands-on with the kit.

Jaga UK’s, Managing Director, Phil Mangnall said:

“We’re very excited to be building this new facility that embodies our company ethos – centred around sustainability, creativity and social responsibility.

Kriekels House gives us the opportunity to open our doors to the HVAC community. We’re looking forward to inviting customers and the wider industry to experience Jaga. The whole HVAC set up including our plant room, heat pumps and emitters will be accessible to visitors so we hope it will be a great showcase for low temperature systems and renewable energy technologies.”

Jaga is hoping to move from their current location into their new facility next summer.

ABOUT JAGA UK

Jaga are pioneers in designing innovative, ecologically sustainable heating, cooling and ventilation systems using less energy and fewer raw materials, ensuring a better indoor climate without damaging the outdoor climate.

Clement Windows Group was selected to manufacture and install almost 1,000 double glazed steel windows at the India Buildings in Liverpool.

The India Buildings is located on Water Street in the centre of the city’s financial and business district.  Designed by architects Arnold Thornely and Herbert J Rowse in response to a competition to design an office block which was judged by the great English architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, it was built between 1924 and 1932 for the Blue Funnel shipping line.  The building’s design is influenced by the Italian Renaissance style and it has several features of the American Beaux-Arts style.

Having sustained damage during World War II the building was restored to its original state after the war under the supervision of Rowse, one of the original architects.

In 2017, the Grade II* Listed Building was purchased by Legal & General and it was announced that HMRC would base a regional centre there.  Renovation works commenced with the focus on creating modern, comfortable office space while retaining the heritage features of the building.

Clement was chosen to manufacture and install the new double glazed steel windows which match the original single glazed metal windows and improve thermal performance and energy use within the historic building. Almost 1,000 windows from the Clement MW40 range were specified, polyester powder painted RAL 9106 (White).

Alex Harrison of architects Falconer Chester Hall said:

“We had the pleasure of working with Clement on the steel window replacements of the India Building refurbishment project.  Their performance in every aspect of the work was outstanding and we wholeheartedly endorse them for any future contracts of a similar nature.  One specific area where Clement excelled during the early stages, was the support we received from them during our discussions with the city planners regarding the bespoke windows.  Their contribution proved very useful in moving matters forward and the end result is exceptional.”

Energy efficiency pays with H+H Celcon Blocks Solar Grade

With buyers willing to pay more for efficient homes, using H+H Celcon Blocks Solar Grade for wall building makes more sense than ever.

Energy efficiency is fast becoming one of the most desirable features of a new home, and one that homebuyers are willing to pay a premium for.

A new survey from Samsung[i] of 1,000 adults looking to move home in the next five years found that almost three quarters (71%) said energy efficiency is a key factor when considering a home and more than half (56%) say it will save them money.

Santander[ii] reported in October 2022 that buyers are paying an average of 15.5% more for a home that meets high energy efficiency standards, with over one third of estate agents reporting that buyers will pay a 20% premium in their area.

For most homebuyers, understanding the energy efficiency of a prospective new home will be done via energy rating systems like EPCs (Energy Performance Certificates). Installing new technologies like PV panels and air source heat pumps will of course impact these ratings. But the building fabric also has a major influence on a dwelling’s EPC rating.

Housebuilders looking to benefit from the higher prices commanded for ultra energy efficient homes need to be taking a fabric first approach. The significance of this has become even more apparent in the 2021 update to the Part L of the building regulations. The changes placed an increased emphasis on building fabric performance and ensuring the precise construction of thermal bridges and junctions.

As better insulation and more efficient heating systems are built into the design of new homes, heat loss from the building envelope becomes increasingly significant in contributing to the overall heat lost from a building. Therefore, getting energy efficiency right in the building fabric is key.

Any H+H aircrete product possesses impressive thermal qualities and can achieve excellent airtightness when used in wall building. H+H Celcon Blocks Solar Grade take efficiency even further however, having been specially engineered to offer enhanced thermal performance over our standard grade aircrete products.

H+H Solar Grade Blocks have a thermal conductivity of 0.11 W/mK and compressive strength of 2.9N/mm2, making them ideal for achieving ultra-low wall U-values in one or two storey dwellings.

Last year Eaton Homes used these blocks in an 89-house development in Cheshire to help reduce the U-values in the houses and make them super energy efficient. Specifying H+H Solar Grade Blocks in particular was part of the housebuilder’s plan to make the homes as desirable as possible, a plan that seemed to work as almost all of the homes were sold before completion.

It’s clear that building energy efficient homes pays, and using H+H Solar Grade Blocks is an ideal way to ensure low carbon living starts with the building fabric.

Ibis Warmly Welcomes Guests with TORMAX Automatic Access

Successfully creating a more welcoming lobby for visiting guests, the Ibis Styles NEC hotel in Birmingham recently contracted TORMAX to install a double set of automatic sliding doors to the main entrance.

The new design more effectively maintains the ambient temperature of reception area, which features a full height atrium, whilst also streamlining busy check-in and check-out times thanks to a more efficient entrance/exit facility.

Delivering reliable and seamless access for all guests, the entrance is powered by two user-friendly, TORMAX 2201 door drives. Measuring just 142mm x 100mm, these operators are particularly neat and compact, making them unobtrusive for both contemporary and traditional settings.

“Originally the Ibis Styles hotel featured two sets of automatic swing doors,” explains Andy Burne, Property Manager for Starboard Hotels, which includes the Ibis brand.

“However, we were finding that the prolonged opening times of swing doors meant that cold air was coming into the building unnecessarily, making an uncomfortable environment for our receptionists and guests.”

Starboard Hotels tendered for the entrance upgrade to several companies and selected TORMAX based on their reputation for excellent support, both with installation and aftercare.

“Although not the cheapest option available,” said Burne, “we look for true value over time rather than taking a narrow view of the initial upfront costs. The result is a smart, contemporary entrance system that provides a better sense of arrival experience for guests.”

A worldwide expert in door automation, TORMAX is a division of the Landert Group which was founded in 1924 and has its headquarters in Bulach-Zurich, Switzerland.

Employing over 1,000 staff across the two divisions of Servax (customised electrical drives) and TORMAX (automatic door systems), the Landert Group is characterised by a long history of innovation, quality and genuine entrepreneurship.

Offering a complete range of automatic access solutions, from impressive curved-sliding entrance pods through to simple folding doors, TORMAX can improve the accessibility of almost any building.

Adveco Introduces the Next Generation Of Packaged Electric Water Heating For Commercial Projects

Building Products Index Ltd Water Heaters Leave a Comment

Visit the Adveco website

Commercial hot water specialist Adveco introduces the next generation of FUSION electric water heating for commercial projects. FUSION-E is a tough, high-efficiency electric water heater. FUSION-T expands the system with the addition of a system-integrated heat pump and advanced controls. Both ranges can be further expanded with the addition of an electric immersion for greater reliance (FUSION-Eplus and FUSION-Tplus).

FUSION is the perfect response for commercial building projects with small to medium basin and sink-led hot water demands. Taller buildings with basement plant rooms and businesses that depend on 24/7 hot water provision for continuity of service all gain advantages from FUSION as well as reducing carbon emissions and controlling costs.

FUSION starts with all new specially designed single- (ATSI) or twin-coil (ATST) corrosion-resistant stainless steel high-pressure indirect cylinders. Offering capacities from 200 to 500 litres, the cylinders feature dedicated mounting points for Adveco’s 12 or 16 kW ARDENT electric boiler. By mounting the electric boiler directly to the cylinder FUSION is a more compact, space-saving option. Supplied with pre-built pipework the latest generation of FUSION is now faster and easier to install.

The electric boiler, with multiple immersions inside its sealed storage tank, provides automatically balanced usage to prolong system life and immediate resilience for the boiler. Used in a sealed ‘primary’ loop, the electric boiler heats the same water continuously effectively eliminating limescale issues typically found in electric systems used in hard water areas.

For the FUSION-T renewable variants, the 6 or 10 kW monobloc air-to-water FPi-32 heat pump (ASHP) is used as a source for system preheat. Contribution from the ASHP is maximised via the bespoke FUSION Control Box. These controls smartly balance the two heat sources, enabling the water in the cylinder to be heated in the most efficient way. As the electric boiler is not required to work as hard to raise flow temperatures to the 65°C demanded by commercial applications. Electrical demand on the boiler is reduced by as much as 30%, delivering operational savings and reducing carbon emissions by up to 71%.

The FUSION-T variants are perfect for organisations seeking to invest in a water heating application as part of a decarbonisation strategy without losing sight of higher operational costs associated with all-electric systems compared to equivalent gas-fired water heating.

Where hot water demands become a business-critical service, FUSION will also support the addition of an Adveco backup immersion providing additional resilience. Fitted into the front-facing clean-out access, the immersion ensures there is no single point of failure for assured service provision.

When only used as an emergency heating source, or during periods of unplanned excess demand, the inclusion of an electric immersion can be extremely advantageous. For FUSION systems incorporating the additional backup 6 or 12 kW immersion (FUSION-Eplus & FUSION-Tplus) controls are further extended to incorporate SMS output to advise building managers of a fault scenario and automated engagement of the immersion back-up to guarantee business-critical hot water supply.

For commercial organisations seeking a hot water system for new buildings faced with the regulatory changes on new gas connections or planning to move from existing gas-fired systems to electrical alternatives, FUSION provides an impressive range of choices. Whether cost, sustainability or business security are the driving factors for specification, FUSION offers a comprehensive response that can be quickly matched to the requirements of a project.
