When delivering projects involving access covers in commercial or education facilities, it is vital that construction professionals partner with manufacturers known for quality, innovation and outstanding design. Here, Kevin Bohea, Managing Director at ACO Building Drainage, explores how architects and contractors can deliver the best access cover for the job.

One important part of any successful project is ensuring quality work is matched with quality solutions. By choosing a manufacturer who has built a world-wide reputation for high-quality products that deliver choice, function and style, it can be the key factor in leaving customers and end-users happy.

In facilities, where areas may be high-traffic and all building components need to be robust and durable, access covers from ACO Building Drainage are regularly installed. We understand that access covers must meet high standards, including being easy to work with for the professionals installing them. They must also be designed with aesthetics in mind and available in a range of finishes. For projects where short turnaround times are a factor, having a portfolio of standard aluminium covers available with three-day delivery means that construction professionals and flooring contractors can provide the right cover, whatever the setting.

Making the grade

Typical applications for access covers in commercial and educational buildings are in corridors and communal areas, where they’ll be subjected to heavy footfall and light traffic from trolleys. In some cases, it may be necessary to account for heavier vehicular traffic too. Available in a choice of materials such as aluminium, hot dipped galvanised steel and stainless-steel grade 304 as standard, ACO access covers complement a variety of hard and flexible floor finishes including concrete, epoxy, terrazzo, carpet, vinyl, stone or ceramic tiles.

With a comprehensive range of standard clear opening sizes from 200mm to 1200mm, ACO floor access covers can be supplied either as single units or for ducting and multi-span applications. Manual lift or gas spring assisted versions are also available to suit the intended method of opening, frequency and ease of operation.

Manufactured using recycled materials, ACO UniFace™ and ACO UniTop™ floor access covers can be 100% recycled at their end of life, contributing to a sustainable environment and eco-friendly building practices. All of ACO’s access covers are tested to the Fabricated Access Cover Trade Association (FACTA) specification and use FACTA classifications for ease of selection and specification.

Delivering quality projects

Planners, architects and end-clients are often looking for reliable partners with answers to very specific problems. Here, ACO Building Drainage’s team of experts can help with the design and specification of bespoke access covers.

Bespoke access covers, that can be sized as needed, are available from ACO in single or multi cover options for both manual and assisted opening designs. These can be manufactured in either aluminium, hot dipped galvanised steel or stainless-steel grade 304 and 316 materials and are also designed to different load classes for pedestrian areas and for heavy traffic areas. Bespoke aluminium covers are often available in fewer than ten working days, helping projects run smoothly and on schedule.

A successful installation is one that meets the project requirements and satisfies the customer’s needs. Education projects can often involve many moving parts and tight deadlines. With ACO’s portfolio of access covers combined with speed of delivery and technical expertise, contractors can be confident that they can deliver quality work, whatever the project.

BUILDING THE NEXT STAGE OF LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY

Following a decade-long collaborative relationship, Marley has recently supported the latest construction development for Derby-based, children’s charity, Foundation Matters.

Like all charities, Foundation Matters has to ensure every penny raised delivers value for money. This is especially important when it comes to construction projects, which always need to be delivered on time and on budget.

Marley first started working with Foundation Matters over ten years ago, and in the intervening time, has continued to support the charity – which runs residential holiday camps for children – through technical design and innovative product solutions.

The latest project sees the two collaborating once more, as the charity embarks on an ambitious building programme to add much-needed accommodation blocks at its site in Stenson, near Derby.

The development showcases Marley’s Weatherboard range, which was recently certified by UL Solutions, a leading authority in applied safety science, following robust independent testing. This provides critical product credibility, so specifiers can select Marley’s Weatherboard solution with confidence, knowing its performance and safety credentials have been thoroughly examined.

Adding further choice for building projects, Weatherboard is also now available in a stylish new blue-grey colourway.  This complements the existing choices of white, light grey, slate grey and black.

Delivering essential accommodation buildings

Foundation Matters provides an invaluable opportunity for children to get away and enjoy a range of low-cost holiday activities, such as orienteering, canoeing, archery and bush craft, in an outdoor setting.

However, as a result of its success, demand for the charity’s services has continued to rise – and so too has the number of volunteers needed to support its mission. To address this, founder Jem Hudson took the strategic decisions to extend the site’s current accommodation facilities and build four new staff blocks, which would future-proof the essential work the charity undertakes.

He says: “As the number of children attending our holiday camps has risen, we need more volunteers to help us provide a safe and stimulating experience. Our original building is no longer large enough to cope with demand. To make it as easy as possible for our volunteers to give their time, we needed to provide more on-site accommodation, and so we started looking at building additional facilities.”

Having worked with Marley since the construction of the site’s main building when it opened in 2014, Jem was keen to build on the relationship as planning for the first of the new four blocks got underway. He continues: “After speaking with Marley, they immediately helped us in a number of ways. They supported with the design specification solutions for the new blocks, which included the selection of Marley’s weatherboard solution to clad the exterior of the structure.

“I was impressed with the minimal maintenance requirements of the weatherboard, as well as its great looks. We had used log sidings on our buildings previously, but they have to be re-stained every year, which is both expensive and time consuming. Marley’s weatherboard removes this job for us and frees up valuable resources for other important areas.

“Marley also worked with us to maximise the budget we had for the build and provided a high quality, aesthetically pleasing solution that the charity could afford.”

As well as the grey weatherboard cladding used to adorn the exterior walls, the new block has also seen the installation of 199m2 Smooth Grey Edgemere concrete slate tiles on the roofscape. Providing a complementary visual appeal that sits perfectly with the surrounding landscape, part of the project planning process included Marley suppling Edgemere tile samples to ensure that the grey specification would match the existing roofing colour on the original building.

As part of its holistic support, Marley also recommended MKM Derby as the roofing contractors and the project was completed on time and within budget.

Future plans

After being so impressed with the benefits delivered by the weatherboard cladding, and the aesthetics of the Edgemere tiles, Jem now plans to use the same specifications on three new accommodation blocks, which will be constructed when budgets allow.

“I hope to eventually replace the sides on the main building, and Marley’s weatherboard is an affordable and high-performing solution, which we will specify for the next three new blocks, as well as for our original building when we have the opportunity. It is durable and weatherproof and is ideal for the rural setting of the holiday camp. When installed, it looks really impressive, and the fact we do not then have to pay attention to it from a maintenance perspective is extremely beneficial for us.”

Charities need the support of companies, such as Marley, to help provide the facilities they require to help make a practical difference, something Jem Hudson is well aware of.

He concludes: “I have had a relationship with Marley for over a decade now, and the new accommodation block is the latest in a long line of successful projects we have worked on together.  Their roof tile and cladding offering is great, delivering affordable and long-lasting solutions.

“Together with the design, supply chain and technical support we have enjoyed, it makes for a great collaborative effort. Everyone is delighted with the end result, and we look forward to commencing work on the other new blocks when we are financially able to.”

Ion Glass specialise in frameless structural glass installations, avoiding or minimising the need for visually intrusive framework in wood or metal.  The scope and variety of work they undertake often results in a multitude of very different structural glass installations within a single project.

This unique and impressive fully frameless glass porch commissioned for a luxury barn conversion in Reading is a testament to Ion’s technical skills both in bespoke design and installation.  The over-sized roof panels are supported by structural glass beams fixed into custom-built brackets, whilst the sides and front of the porch are set into concealed glazing channels, with no visible framework.  A frameless glass entrance door is set into the porch, providing full security with minimal fittings.

This stunning glass porch was only an element of the overall project, with Ion Glass working with the home-owner to install a range of frameless structural glass throughout the renovation.

The internal staircase is constructed from cast concrete hung off a central brick column at the heart of the barn. Ion Glass designed and installed a frameless glass balustrade to fit flawlessly around the curve of the staircase, with each individual helical glass panel perfectly following the stepped underside of the stairs.  Manufactured in 17.5mm laminated and toughened glass the balustrade is fully compliant without requiring a handrail.

The mezzanine floors on either side of the barn are accessed via a concrete bridge, with frameless glass balustrading on either side.  Ion’s technical team ensured the glass was designed and installed to flow seamlessly across the span, fixed to the front of the concrete with a row of stainless steel bolt fixings. A stunning combination of heritage building and contemporary style, with no clunky framework to impact either visually or physically on the original structure.

Upstairs, the bathrooms feature fully opaque, frameless glass doors, each one individually designed to fit the space.  A sliding door to the master bathroom makes optimum use of the space available whilst the glass door to the ensuite is shaped to fit perfectly under the angle of the roof beam.

Fully experienced in the wide and varied use of frameless structural glass as a building material, the expert team at Ion Glass provide a full design and installation service to ensure every result is fully compliant, meeting all relevant building and construction requirements.  The team will take a design from concept to completion, managing the installation logistics as appropriate.

Smart Rain Garden Supported by AquaCell Core R

Building Products Index Ltd Water management solutions Leave a Comment

A smart rain garden in a central London borough has been designed by Wavin in partnership with Meristem to allow for both greenification and irrigation. As a result, smart technology can monitor moisture levels in the soil, recycle captured and stored rainwater to water the plants in times of drought.

A London borough sought to refurbish a stretch of road, greenifying the entirety of one side of the carriageway. This would be delivered with the use of rain gardens totaling nearly 400m in length. While this proposal would deliver excellent results with respect to SuDs guidance, a concern for maintenance arose, especially in an ever-warming and dry London.

As a result, a smart rain garden solution was developed. Pairing Wavin’s water management expertise with Meristem Design’s rain garden installation, there is now an underground rainwater attenuation solution capable of providing approximately 5 weeks’ worth of irrigation for during dry periods. Using sub-surface moisture sensors and irrigation lines, the solution only draws on the retained rainwater when it is needed.

Why use our system?

An on-going concern for customers with shallow SuDS systems such as rain gardens is their need for regular maintenance. By using infiltrated and retained rainwater, paired with a smart irrigation system, installations such as the one in London can draw on the value of free rainwater that falls on the site instead of paying for it. In wetter periods, the smart system includes an active drain down function. In turn, this will relieve pressure on the local surface water sewer and provide partial storage capacity with the rain gardens, to mitigate against low volume flood events. This is achieved by integrating predictive algorithms linked to weather data.

Surface water design, supply & installation – sorted

Wavin offers a bespoke service to support developers, tier one design and build contractors and civil engineering firms to effectively manage surface water on their sites.

This includes a high quality, single source solution to the design, supply, and installation of stormwater tanks and all their associated infrastructure, from capture and attention to dispersal.

End-to-end, everything is taken care of by Wavin – we consult and advise on site, we value engineer the optimum design, we manufacture and co-ordinate the required products and components, we install through fully trained StormForce partners, and we underpin the installation with a five-year warranty.

It’s the future of sustainable drainage. It’s fast and efficient. It’s hassle and risk free, and it’s quality and compliance assured. It’s StormForce, and it’s one less thing for you to worry about on every project you undertake.

TORMAX Delivers Access Solutions to Prestigious Commercial Facility

As part of a major expansion, TORMAX was invited to return to the headquarters of De Soutter Medical Ltd – a decade after installing an automatic curved-sliding door to the main entrance – to enhance the facility with four additional automatic door systems.

A newly created main entrance features an impressive semi-circular, curved sliding door, like the initial installation. Two bi-parting sliding doors systems provide side-access to the building. In the warehouse, a double set of curved sliding doors work in tandem to create a D-shaped lobby, where small deliveries can be quickly and easily processed.

All entrances are powered by TORMAX iMotion 2202.A door drives. Uniquely engineered with a motor that features none of the working parts that generally wear out, such as gears or brushes, the iMotion 2202.A delivers exceptional reliability and longevity.

De Soutter Medical specialises in the development, production, and global distribution of high-performance, powered orthopaedic tools, for surgical procedures. At the UK headquarters in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, the company combines premium office space with advanced manufacturing facilities, as well as substantial landscaping and outdoor features that contribute to a positive working environment.

TORMAX worked with sub-contractor, Apic, and the architect, to deliver functional yet aesthetically impressive automatic entrances throughout the facility.

“TORMAX doors have well-deserved reputation for durability,” said Simon Roberts, MD for TORMAX UK Ltd. “The original system installed at De Soutter Medical is still performing reliably and the new entrances will continue long into the future. With minimal ongoing maintenance demands, our door drives have been known to last more than 25 years.”

As well as adding a prominent architectural detail to the front of a building, curved-sliding door systems are intensely practical, providing up to 40% more pass-through space than linear sliding doors.

In buildings with entrance pods formed by two curved sliding doors, like in the De Soutter warehouse facility, heat loss can be greatly reduced by programming the doors so that one is always closed. This setup ensures a continuous physical barrier against outside elements, helping to maintain indoor temperature.

Future Proofing: Energy Efficiency with H+H Aircrete

Building Products Index Ltd Blocks, Concrete Leave a Comment

Visit the H+H website

To meet the demands and regulations of an environmentally sustainable future, take a ‘fabric first’ approach.

Sustainable standards are more important than ever. The growing consciousness concerning the environment is reflected in modern building regulations, such as the Future Homes Standard, expected to come into effect this year.

As we know, not all materials are created equal in terms of conserving energy and regulating temperatures in a building. At H+H, we support a “fabric first” philosophy. This means that we believe thermal efficiency should be built into the fabric of a house, so it remains effective for the lifetime of the building. Choosing aircrete ensures the building will benefit from high energy efficiency for years to come.

Thermal efficiency and U-values

Aircrete has a low rate of heat transfer through a structure (U-value) and is highly thermally efficient. The temperature in buildings constructed with aircrete is well regulated, keeping the heat in during cold winter months and the heat out on hot summer days. This reduces the energy used to control the temperature with systems such as central heating, resulting in a lower carbon footprint for the building.

One standard being encouraged in the move towards an energy efficient future is Passivhaus. Passivhaus is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency, which reduces the building’s ecological footprint. To achieve Passivhaus certification, a build must be airtight, and have an extremely low U-value.

H+H aircrete can be used for airtight construction, and its high thermal performance helps to meet stringent Passivhaus requirements, making it an ideal choice for energy-efficient building projects seeking the Passivhaus stamp of approval.

New standards of energy efficiency regulations are expected this year in the Future Homes Standard (FHS), which based on the current information available, we anticipate H+H aircrete will surpass.

Compatibility with heat pumps

Another key expectation set out in the Future Homes Standard is the requirement for new homes to be ‘zero-carbon ready’, meaning no work will be necessary to allow them to achieve zero carbon emissions when the electricity grid is fully decarbonised.

To achieve this objective the government encourages the use of heat pumps as the primary source of heating for houses as they are efficient and low carbon, and are less expensive to run than alternative electric heating systems.

Heat pumps work most efficiently if the home is well insulated. Constructing a building’s fabric with products that have a high U-value, indicating they are not very thermally efficient, can hinder the effectiveness of a heat pump. This is far from ideal, particularly given the significant initial investment required to install a heat pump. Aircrete’s high thermal efficiency makes it an ideal material for constructing homes that incorporate heat pumps, allowing them to perform to their full potential.

Long term thermal efficiency

While houses built today must have a minimum life expectancy of just 60 years, H+H aircrete has a lifespan of over 100 years.

This longevity means the benefits of aircrete, specifically its thermal efficiency, will last long into the future, continuing to require reduced heating and cooling demands for decades, making it a sustainable choice for future-proof construction.

Choosing aircrete for construction projects contributes to energy savings, supporting long-term sustainability goals. As we move towards a future where energy efficiency is paramount, materials like aircrete will play a crucial role in shaping buildings that are not only comfortable and cost-effective to maintain but also kind to the environment.
