  • Expanded range of electric water heaters (Fusion-E) and packaged renewable water heaters (FUSION-T)
  • Rugged and highly resilient for use in both hard and soft water conditions
  • Easier and faster to install

Commercial hot water specialist Adveco expands its award-winning low-carbon FUSION packaged electric water heater system. Offering 80 pre-sized variants and multiple prebuilt pipework options FUSION simplifies the process of specifying and installing sustainable hot water in commercial buildings.

FUSION-E is an electric water heater combining Adveco’s ARDENT electric boiler with a specially designed single (ATSI) corrosion-resistant stainless steel high-pressure indirect cylinder, pipework, thermostat and overheat thermostat. FUSION-T packages the electric boiler with a twin-coil (ATST) cylinder an FPi-32 monobloc air source heat pump (ASHP) and a FUSION Control Box for greater carbon reduction. FUSION-E and T-plus plus variants incorporate a 6 kW electric backup immersion and FUSION Control Box, plus provide remote alerts for added business resiliency.

The entire FUSION line now supports storage capacities ranging from 300 to 750-litre capacity with nominal power output starting at 14 kW in the FUSION-E and up to 33 kW in FUSION-T models that combine the electric boiler and an ASHP. FUSION will now support continuous flow rates of over 560 litres per hour, and in excess of 1380 litres during a two-hour period of peak usage.

Compared to equivalent gas-fired water heating systems the FUSION-E models, solely deploying the ARDENT electric boiler will provide carbon emission savings of more than 38%. But with smart controls balancing two heat sources in FUSION-T models contribution from the ASHP is maximised to deliver a working flow of 50-55°C at an ambient operating temperature of 2°C setting a realistic benchmark for operating conditions in the UK. This ensures the electric boiler is not required to work as hard to raise flow temperatures to the 65°C demanded by commercial applications. Carbon emissions compared to electric-only systems are cut by up to 29% and by as much as 56% compared to gas-fired equivalents.

Incorporating water heating as a part of a sustainable building strategy, whether new build or retrofit, is typically complex and therefore time time-consuming and expensive. FUSION was conceived to address these challenges, simplifying the specification and installation of water heating with defined carbon savings. With the electric boiler mounted directly onto the cylinder with pre-built pipework supporting left or right-sided boiler location, FUSION is a more compact, space-saving alternative to gas water heating that can be installed and operational in as little as four hours.

Bill Sinclair, technical director, Adveco says: “With greater choice and continued development, FUSION stands as the benchmark for all-electric water heating in commercial buildings that must address their carbon emissions today. The hybrid approach that FUSION-T variants provide is, without doubt, the most effective and efficient way of optimising current technology to address net zero strategies in a realistic, lower-impact and cost-effective manner.”

“FUSION has proven to be a tough all-rounder, no matter a project’s location,” Bill continues.  The corrosive effects of soft water are easily mitigated by FUSION’s stainless steel cylinders whilst the electric boiler, with multiple immersions inside its sealed storage tank, provides automatically balanced usage to prolong system life and immediate resilience for the boiler.  With this sealed ‘primary’ loop, the electric boiler heats the same water continuously effectively eliminating limescale issues typically found in electric systems used in hard water areas. “FUSION continues to run clear and free of scale after a year of operation whereas electric immersions at the same location can be reduced to scrap in a matter of weeks,” Bill observes.

For those wishing to futureproof a specification, the FUSION-E systems can also be supplied with a twin-coil ATST cylinder as an alternative to the ATSI. Prebuilt pipework provides connection for the electric boiler to the lower coil in this case. The addition of a heat pump later can therefore be supported with a new pipework kit and controls upgrading the system to a FUSION-T specification.

For commercial organisations with both small or larger sink-led hot water demands, taller buildings with basement plant rooms or operations that rely on 24/7 hot water supply Adveco FUSION provides the most comprehensive response available today.

H+H, the UK’s leading aircrete manufacturer, has made its Celcon Vertical Wall Panels (VWPs) available on NBS Source to facilitate the design process for specifiers using the tool to explore different product solutions, and for creating design models. Through NBS Source, you can ensure that aircrete panels meet the structural and performance requirements of your project, review the EPD and NHBC Accepts certification, download product information, and import the BIM object directly into your drawings.

Celcon Vertical Wall Panels are storey-high aircrete panels intended for the construction of domestic houses up to two or three storeys. They are manufactured offsite and craned into place for a fast, panelised building system.

Aircrete is a lightweight masonry material that combines the strength, durability, and thermal efficiency of concrete with the ease of use of a lighter material. It is made from a mixture of sand, pulverised fuel ash (PFA), cement, lime, and water, with aluminium powder added to create the iconic ‘bubbles’, which are the hallmark of aircrete. Stainless steel rods are inserted in the storey high panels for safe onward transport before the panel is cured in autoclaves under high pressure.

H+H VWPs offer numerous benefits when used in a variety of construction projects, including their quick installation process, with the entire ground floor of a house installed in just one day. The panels are craned into place on standard foundations and secured with fast-setting thin-layer mortar, creating a 3mm airtight joint for a high-quality build. The ability to cut VWPs on site contributes to a reduction in site wastage.

Vertical Wall Panels are also highly thermally efficient, boasting a low U-value of 0.17 W/mK, which is compliant with Passivhaus standards, as well as being resistant to water damage, fire, and mould.

H+H panels are versatile, available in different sizes and are a great choice if a masonry Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) solution is desired. They are designed to have a long lifespan, lasting over a hundred years, making them a durable and sustainable choice.

By incorporating VWPs into specifications, architects can help streamline the construction process, reducing build time on site. This also enables follow-on trades to begin work sooner, so even if time-consuming elements such as stonewall exteriors are also specified, there is less impact on project timescales.

The benefits don’t stop at the outer shell with aircrete, which also offers the advantage of increased sound insulation. Aside from its inherent strength and thermal efficiency, Vertical Wall Panels can be used in internal walls and partitions, with an approved Robust Detail (E-WM-31) in place ensuring the reduction of sound within the house.

Using NBS Source to find and specify products for your project can be an incredibly useful step and H+H Vertical Wall Panel BIM objects are as easy to integrate into an architect’s drawings as they are to build with on site.

Ensuring fire safety in high rise buildings: The essential role of access panels

Building Products Index Ltd Access Panels Leave a Comment

In the dynamic environment of commercial and industrial buildings, facilities managers are tasked with the responsibility of maintaining a safe environment for building occupants and crucial to that is minimising fire risks.

Following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, The Golden Thread concept was introduced as part of the Building Safety Act, which highlights the need for better documentation, transparency and accountability in the context of building safety and management.

Naturally, facilities management professionals are some of those with the greatest responsibility for ensuring that the Golden Thread of building safety information is maintained, accessible and up-to-date.

This requires the accurate documentation of any changes, upgrades or maintenance work carried out, which contributes to recording the overall building safety and regulatory compliance.

Commercial and industrial buildings will house numerous complex systems, including fire suppression systems, electrical installations and HVAC infrastructure; all of which require routine inspections and maintenance to ensure their efficiency and compliance with safety regulations.

One critical component that facilitates this maintenance is access panels. Beyond their functional purpose of providing access for maintenance personnel to inspect, service and repair systems, access panels play a significant yet often overlooked role when it comes to fire safety.

During the building’s initial construction, major contractors should seek to install fire rated access panels where third-party certification can be supplied.

An example of this third-party certification is the Certifire scheme, which ensures the quality and reliability of fire protection products, thus guaranteeing that these have been rigorously tested and comply with relevant safety standards within the Building Safety Act.

Certifire accredited access panels can ensure the highest standards of safety and protection against the spread of flames and smoke in the event of a fire through swift containment, which in turn, can minimise property damage and save lives.

The installation of these panels will ensure that facilities managers will always be able to provide third party certification for these products at the time of installation, which provides them peace of mind within the buildings they maintain, and ensures that adherence to the Golden Thread and legal compliance is achieved.

In order to achieve this, facilities managers should maintain an up-to-date record of access panel locations, which clearly specifies their purpose.

This information – which will be proactively shared by conscientious suppliers – helps in identifying access points which provide crucial entry to fire suppression systems, allowing easy inspection, repair and maintenance, as well as enabling emergency responders quick and efficient access during the event of a fire.

In addition, any modifications made to access panels, such as installations, maintenance, relocations or upgrades, should be promptly recorded. This documentation aids in tracking the history and condition of access panels, ensuring that maintenance is conducted timely and potential fire safety risks are swiftly addressed.

Finally, irrespective of the industry, compliance with fire safety regulations is essential.

Accurate documentation of access panels assists facility managers in demonstrating compliance to regulatory authorities during building inspections and audits. Outdated or inadequate documentation can lead to compliance issues, costly penalties, or in worst case scenarios, compromised fire safety.

Third-party Certifire tested and accredited access panels can ensure the highest standards of safety and protection against the spread of flames and smoke in the event of a fire through swift containment, which in turn, can minimise property damage and save lives.

Access panels stand as vital components in the broader framework of fire safety within commercial and industrial buildings, through facilitating routine inspections, efficient maintenance, and swift access during firefighting efforts in the event of an emergency.

The relationship between fire rated access panels and the Golden Thread highlights the necessity of meticulous record-keeping throughout the building’s lifecycle, which not only helps in maintaining regulatory compliance, but also enhances the overall fire safety management of the building.

By prioritising this, facilities managers can plan an essential role in fortifying the building’s fire safety resilience, create a safer environment for occupants and ensure that fire safety obligations are met.

Why automated sliding shutters offer a stunning shading and privacy solution

Building Products Index Ltd Shutters Leave a Comment

Although still relatively rare in Britain and Ireland, horizontally sliding external shutters could play a valuable role in enabling buildings to respond to the effects of climate change and give homeowners and developers new aesthetic options.

The key benefits of this type of façade-integrated product include their potential to help control the climate inside our properties, as well as reduce the amount of glare and the risk of UV light fading interior furnishings. Interior blinds mounted on walls and window frames can help achieve these goals too, of course, as do externally mounted solar shading systems.

Bespoke sliding shutters, however, offer something very different as one outstanding luxury home project in rural Kent demonstrates. The way that the automated sliding shutters have been incorporated into the design of Waterfield House by pH+ Architects exemplifies how they can serve a functional purpose as part of a smart building, whilst adding to the visual appeal of a residential property.

A series of external movable shutters was installed by Rundum Meir, a company usually associated only with premium bespoke garage doors. The concept of these shutters, however, is similar to that of the company’s sliding garage door systems, which are regularly specified for unique and high-specification residential properties where the client is seeking to achieve a pleasing design and functionality.

The shutters are a key part of the façade of Waterfield House, which is a modern take on the traditional English country house. The client’s goal for the new property was to create a house which was bold and operated with precision, whilst being intimate and having a strong connection to its site.

The façade is articulated elegantly, with large sliding glazed doors sitting behind the movable larch shutters. These are opened and closed in line with the level of shading, ventilation and privacy required at a given time, whilst casting dappled shadows throughout the day. They deliver a unique external look, which changes throughout the day according to the position of the shutters.

But there are variations inside the house too, with the shutters providing adaptability that changes the character of the interior spaces whilst allowing the house to respond sensitively to our ever-changing weather and climate.

The slick controllability offered by the shutters is ideally suited to the technologically advanced home. The expertise of Rundum Meir’s team ensured seamless integration of the shutters into a building packed with sophisticated technology, inspired by the client’s background, which means they open and close at the click of a button.

This reliable mechanisation of the shutters is something that many building facades could benefit from, not only for shading but to create spaces where occupants feel at their safest and most secure. The shifting light patterns resulting from the vertical slats also add an interesting dimension inside the home.

The vertical arrangement of the slats on the Waterfield House shutters makes them very different to sliding louvre systems, which have become a slightly more common sight here in the UK. These products can achieve similar objectives, but they wouldn’t have met the styling goals in this project.

The Rundum Meir team’s experience of working on bespoke projects – which is every single one of their client commissions – meant they could fulfil the unique requirements of the project. This included specifying the most suitable track system that would offer long term reliability and be compatible with the client’s home automation system, as well as being able to accommodate the larch slats in a way that was aesthetically consistent with the rest of the façade.

To discuss manual or automated external shutter systems further contact Rundum Meir  on 0151 280 6626 or via www.rundum.co.uk.
