Today, the leading fibre cement building product manufacturer, Cembrit, is entering the UK market with a brand-new fibre cement weatherboard – Cembrit Plank. Extremely versatile, low in maintenance, and rot, rust, warp, crack, sun, heat, rain and fire resistant, this board is an excellent alternative to timber and plastic based alternatives. The overlapping plank is designed to look like painted timber, but will retain its attractive appearance long after alternatives have started to age. Furthermore, Cembrit Plank does not require toxic preservative treatments in the way timber weatherboarding does.

Although there are other fibre cement weatherboards available, Cembrit has responded to market demand and offers Cembrit Plank, which is warrantied for 15 years. There are 15 different colours available, which have been especially chosen for the United Kingdom. A range of white and dark grey shades match traditional building styles, while the addition of reds, pale browns and pastel green offer a more contemporary choice. In addition, the range includes a ready primed option for clients wishing to add their own choice of colour. For large enough orders, Cembrit can arrange customised colours.

The range includes a comprehensive set of colour matched accessories, including the roofline trims needed for a neat finish where façade meets the roof. Cembrit really has thought of everything to make life easy for property owners and installers.

Axis Stanley Dura-Care doors for Spire Hartswood Hospital

Five Stanley Dura-Care 7500 telescopic sliding doors have been installed by Axis Automatic Entrance Systems at the Spire Hartswood Private Hospital in Brentwood Essex. Halliday Meecham Architects were looking to replace timber doors on the 5 patient “pods” used in the recovery area for day-case procedures. The previous doors restricted access for moving beds in and out of the rooms and also created a very closed and detached environment. While researching alternatives they found the Stanley Dura-Care door range featured on the Axis Automatic Entrance Systems website. The fully glazed doors create a much brighter and attractive ambience in the recovery rooms and the breakout facility makes moving beds around much easier. Four of the doors consist of one fixed leaf 765mm wide and two sliding leaves that combine to give a clear opening of 1450mm in a full width of 2215mm. The fifth door is slightly smaller but of similar proportions.

The Stanley Dura-Care 7500 is a manual sliding door system designed to meet the specific needs of hospital intensive and cardiac care units (ICU/CCU). This telescopic door is available in 3 or 6 panel packages and those installed at Spire Hartswood Hospital feature emergency breakout on the leading sliding leaf, positive latching and are a trackless design to provide completely unimpeded access. The 6.4mm laminated glass panels have made the whole area much brighter and lighter and are proving very popular with patients and staff alike compared to the previous unglazed doors. Frosted film has been applied to parts of the glass to give privacy without reducing the overall brightness.

Project Manager Kevin Hill of M&O Building Contractors was also impressed with the service provided by Axis, particularly the way problems were overcome and the final completion date strictly adhered to.

Addagrip Case Study Constitution Hill – The East-West Cycle Superhighway

Addagrip were delighted to see their BBA approved Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfacing installed at Constitution Hill to form part of the new East-West Cycle Superhighway which will run through central London from Tower Hill to Lancaster Gate.

Working for Transport for London, F M Conway Ltd were responsible for the installation of a new stretch of the cycle path that runs alongside Green Park to provide a safe route for cyclists from Buckingham Palace to Wellington Arch.

BBA approved Terrabound Resin Bound surfacing was selected to provide over 2,200m2 of smooth, seamless, porous paving that would be hard wearing and provide good slip resistance for the cyclists. The natural aggregate finish in a 6mm Rhine Gold complements the location alongside Green Park and will provide a low maintenance surface in this busy area of Central London.

F M Conway carried out the installation over a 9-day period working in one of the busiest tourist locations in Central London and during a period of very hot weather. They started at Wellington Arch/Commonwealth Memorial end of Constitution Hill and finished the last 185m stretch outside Buckingham palace on Friday 8th July. Whilst the crowds gathered to watch the Household Cavalry ride up Constitution Hill from Wellington Arch, St James’s, London to Buckingham Palace there was also much public interest in seeing the team’s coordinated system of installing the resin bound surface and watching the transformation as it happened.

The work was completed alongside the existing path that runs along green park. A metal edging detail was used, separating the Resin Bound surface from the hoggin surface around the existing mature trees that line the roadside.

Oliver Stutts was pleased with the result:

‘Constitution Hill was the first scheme I have personally undertaken using this product. I was very much impressed with the delivery from Addagrip.

I found it to be a high-end and quality product and I would most certainly use this material in the future on projects of this calibre.

Contiguous piles have many advantages in the formation of a retaining wall. This method of construction involves the creation of a line of deep bores that are then back filled with concrete. The advantage of this method of construction is that it is possible to support the adjacent structure before bulk excavation takes place. Contiguous piles are particularly suited to sites with restricted access.
Of all the methods of piling it is typically the most cost effective and least time consuming. The wall consists of individual piles typically installed at centres 150mm greater than their diameter. This means that there are gaps between the piles and therefore contiguous piles are suitable only where the groundwater table is permanently below excavation level.

Even above the water table, below ground structures can be subject to water pressure. Surface water run-off, perched water tables and defective water mains can all lead to significant water ingress. It is very important that the below ground structure acts as the first line of defence from a waterproofing perspective.

The waterproofing of contiguous piles can often be challenging. It is not possible to rely on a waterproof additive in the piles themselves. Likewise it is not possible to waterproof the pile externally.

Cavity drainage membranes are the most reliable and effective method of waterproofing basement spaces however when used as the only waterproofing system with contiguous piled walls, special attention is require. It is important to minimise the workload of the groundwater drainage system and any pumps. Also it is crucial that earth from between the piles does not wash out into the drainage system and cause blockages.

It is therefore important to maximise the structural water tightness of the wall, this can be achieved using a poured or a spray concrete liner in front of the piles

New build residential

In recent years the structural warranty providers have begun to recognise the importance of effective waterproofing design. NHBC in chapter 5.4 states that where grade 3 protection is required where “below ground wall retains more than 600mm, measured from the lowest finished floor level, the waterproofing design should include a combination of two of the Types of waterproofing systems”

This secondary waterproofing system would need to be internal, again it would not be possible to waterproof the outside of the piles.

Koster NB1 is a high performance migratory crystalline slurry that not only acts as physical barrier but also acts to waterproof the substrate itself. The NB1 slurry can be spray or brush applied to a concrete liner wall formed in front of the piles and continued across the structural slab before the installation of the cavity drainage membrane.

An alternative would be to use the Delta Dualproof membrane. This is a pre applied external waterproof system but is suitable in this application as it can be “sandwiched” between the piles and a poured concrete liner. The face of the piles would need to be levelled before application by filling the cusps with mortar before the DualProof is applied. A concrete liner wall is then cast onto the DualProof waterproofing barrier.

Capping Beam

A concrete ring is formed at the top of the piles in order to link them together. This is typically larger than the piles and will extend into the building space. This will also need to waterproofed if it is below the external ground level. Koster NB1 mineral slurry can be used to effectively waterproof the ring beam.

PIR presence detection is now the norm in most offices and many residential buildings, and fitting detectors into ceilings is probably one of the jobs you do almost every day. So the news that they’ve become a lot easier to install and set up will be more than welcome.

The icing on the cake is making them easy to install. Time is money and the quicker you can do a good job the more profitable it is. So the mantra in our design office is “Easy Installation”! You loved it when we introduced our LED Pro range of NIGHTeye LED floodlights with a choice of plug in detectors (pictured). Now we’ve turned our attention to making another job easier for you and introduced new easy-install ceiling mounted PIR presence detectors.

Most electricians are either working to a pre-quoted price or specified time schedule. As it is, a significant portion of your day — up to two thirds — will be spent completing ancillary tasks associated with an installation. Only the remaining one third of the day is spent being productive and actively dedicated to the actual installation and testing of systems – it doesn’t take much to go wrong on site to tip your day from being a good earner to a loss leader.

Plug and Play PIR

The new range of mini-PIR presence detectors from Timeguard has been designed from scratch with easy installation and set up in mind: and once they are fitted you won’t need to pull them out of the ceiling to adjust the settings thanks to our twist and lock idea.

One niggle we had often heard when visiting wholesaler counters was about the hassle of installing, setting and adjusting ceiling mounted PIRs. Wiring up tiny terminals at the top of a ladder can be tricky, you told us – so we designed added big wiring terminals.

Handy as they are initially, many of you had a problem with the spring clips which are generally used to hold detectors in their apertures. They often scratch and damage the ceiling if you need to remove the detector to get the settings right. So we fixed all that…. and now you can change the settings in situ.

How did we do all this?

We started by creating a separate wiring box to allow space for a bigger terminal block, but still small enough to pop easily through the ceiling aperture once connected. We then put cable and RJ11 plugs on the detectors so you can just plug them into the wiring box, spring clip them into the aperture. Job done.

And it gets better: here’s an even more ingenious idea. To make the controls easily accessible from outside the ceiling, yet still be hidden from view. With our design solution getting to the controls for the lux level and time-on potentiometers is as easy as taking out a bayonet lightbulb. Simply twist the detector and the inner cylinder drops down, revealing the controls for lux level (10 to 2000 lux) and time (30 seconds to 30 minutes). When you’re done, push it back up and twist to lock it in place.

Master/slave set up

These high quality detectors are rated to switch up to 250W LED /fluorescent and 2300W halogen, so there was plenty of scope to add inexpensive slave detectors. We’ve made that easy too: you can connect up to five slaves in series, using the pre-fitted RJ11 plugs and sockets and a full 5 metres of cable It really could not be easier to wire up, say, a corridor or large space and of course, changing and extending an installation is straightforward.

Of course, there’s a standalone option as well, without a separate wiring box but with a lens cap to hide the external controls.

These compact 47mm detectors have a range of 8m. They tick all the boxes.

NDC launches Lunaglaze – new modular glass rooflight with next-day delivery

The National Domelight Company has introduced a new brand of glass modular rooflight to its wide range of solutions. Lunaglaze is a standard specification, glass modular rooflight that is available in a range of 14 stocked sizes for next-day delivery.

Rooflights let three times more daylight into a property than an equivalent sized vertical window, with the Lunaglaze rooflight providing a stylish and cost-effective solution for optimising the use of natural daylight. Lunaglaze is NDC’s only glass modular rooflight that has two frame options: Lunaglaze PVC and Lunaglaze ALU.

Lunaglaze PVC is a fully-sealed, double-glazed PVC and glass construction with toughened and laminated clear glass. Meanwhile, Lunaglaze ALU combines high-performance, silicone-bonded, flat-sealed glass units with a fully-welded aluminium framework. This high-quality framework is powder coated and comes in a range of RAL colours, with RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey the standard colour. A Stannah milestone at London Bridge

A significant milestone was reached with the opening of an impressive portion of the London Bridge project in August 2016. Phase 2A of the project saw two thirds of the concourse; platforms 4, 5, 6, and 7 plus the extended terminus platform open to the public.

Six Stannah lifts have now been installed in this hugely challenging environment, with the Major Projects team moving mountains to ensure the deadlines were met.

Work began on-site in early 2015 after an additional two years of design and planning.

Installations so far are two 5000kg/66 person goods lifts, two 2500kg/33 person partially-glazed scenic passenger lifts, one part-glazed staff lift providing travel over 3 stops and one smaller part-glazed 1200kg/16 person passenger lift. Every one of these lifts is crucial to the smooth movement of people within the station.

The £1bn redevelopment of London Bridge Station is part of Network Rail’s railway upgrade plan and the government-sponsored Thameslink programme which will transform north-south travel through London by 2018. The programme includes new track and modern trains to provide more reliable journeys for passengers. Network Rail is also untangling the track on the approaches to London Bridge station to reduce the time trains wait for platforms to clear and cut delays. This non-stop hub is estimated to have 56 million passengers passing through in just one year.

Surveying the newly opened section of the concourse, Mark Carne, Network Rail’s chief executive said:

“This is a big step towards the bigger, better railway passengers deserve. The opening of two-thirds of the concourse marks a major milestone in the redevelopment of London Bridge and, while there is plenty still to do, I am pleased passengers can now see the benefits beginning to come through.

“We are essentially rebuilding Britain’s fourth busiest station – the tracks, the platforms and the infrastructure which enables trains to run – while keeping the station open and doing our best to keep passengers moving.”

The clients, Costain and Network Rail offered congratulations to the whole team with communication from the project manager saying:

“I hope the public will be wowed by the scale and finish of the station, but it is unlikely they will appreciate the tremendous effort that you have all put in to get the project to this point. The amount of work achieved every shift on this complex project has been truly staggering. The level of co-ordination and interface management has been extreme at times. These last few months have been particularly tough but you have been resolute and have delivered a fantastic result. In addition, performances by some of our team over the weekend were truly inspirational and ensured we opened in good order.  Whether you have been here from the beginning or are new to the project, a massive thank you for your hard work and dedication in our biggest triumph to date.”

Stannah has a further three partially-glazed scenic lifts to install in Phase 3 of the project during 2017. These will provide access in the Northern Concourse. The final overall project handover is due in 2018. Once complete, the redevelopment will provide passengers with a bigger, better railway, with improved connections from a concourse the size of the pitch at Wembley. This will include over 80 retail units for a spot of en-route shopping.

“This project to date has been extremely demanding. The station has been operational so many unsociable hours of working in difficult conditions have got us to this significant point. We are very pleased with the result so far and grateful to our client for the recognition received. The new part of this unique station is very impressive and will certainly make a huge difference to travellers through this constantly busy hub. After a celebration of our progress to date the team are ready for the challenge of the next phase.”

Stannah resume work on London Bridge Phase 3 later in this, their 150th anniversary year. Joseph Stannah began the company making cranes, hoists and then lifts on London’s dockside in 1867 and it is still a family owned and run Brtish business.

Eurocell’s new Specification Guide provides a complete low-down of the firm’s range of window, door and roof systems. Specifiers can find technical details and supporting information about each product line, together with useful summaries about all the relevant regulations and standards.

As a cradle-to-grave supplier, Eurocell has gathered a wealth of industry experience and knowledge, which is reflected in the additional information that comes with the guide. The Derbyshire company, founded in 1974, manufactures PVC-U profiles, distributes them to the local fabricators who make the Eurocell range of products, and recycles PVC-U at the end of its life.

Swedish Hospital “Takes a Chance” on Howe Green

The New Karolinska Solna University Hospital (NKS) in Stockholm has been hitting the headlines for over a decade. The original Karolinska University Hospital was founded in 1930. Since the 1930’s the hospital campus has expanded to cover a vast area with an estate of over 40 separate buildings.

In 2005 Stockholm County Council, who are responsible for delivering healthcare in the city, ran a design competition inviting “visionary thinking, modern design and unconventional ideas to form the basis of the creation of the new hospital”. The competition was won by White Architects from Sweden with their “Forum Karolinska”.

In 2008 Stockholm County Council took the decision to go ahead with the new hospital. They were the first Swedish healthcare project to adopt the Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework to finance, build and manage a hospital. In 2010 the PPP agreement was made between the County Council and the project company – Swedish Hospital Partner AB, a consortium of Skanska and their investment partner UK based Innisfree.

Skanska employed White Architects and Tengbom Architects to execute the design and coordinate the construction of the £1.5 billion facility.

A significant aim of the project was to create a purpose built environment with a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. Phase One of the building has attained LEED Gold and the Swedish system “Miljöbyggnad” Gold certification

The ethos is to put the patient first and the list of facilities is impressive. It has 730 in-patient beds, 100 rooms for day care, 36 operating theatres, 168 out-patient clinic rooms and 8 radiation treatment rooms.

Howe Green Ltd supplied a number of HSE75 Hinged Aluminium Floor Access Covers for the hospital through their Swedish distributor, Elkington AB. From their base in Stockholm Elkington have been distributing Howe Green access covers for projects across Sweden since 1999.

The gas assisted hinged HSE75 hatches provide easy and safe access to the underground power stations and escape routes located underneath the hospital. They have been installed in the various areas of the hospital and infilled with both concrete and tiled flooring to provide a seamless, flush floor finish.

The hinged access hatches are ideal for environments where regular access to concealed services is required for maintenance purposes and in public places where health and safety is crucial.

The HSE75 can be infilled with ceramic tiles, marble, terrazzo, concrete, resin, wood or parquet floors and is suitable for pedestrian and vehicle traffic up to a 5 tonne pneumatic tyre wheel load. Supplied as a single cover or a configuration of duct covers in standard sizes from stock or precision made to order.

Options include a top and underside release latch, for added security and safety, a double seal and fire rating up to 3 hours BS 476: Part 20: 1987.

The Howe Green range of access covers are tried and tested in a healthcare setting. They have been specified in hospitals around the world including Southmead Hospital in Bristol, Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Lennox Addington Hospital in Ontario, Canada.

Eurocell delivers Skypod lanterns expressly

Eurocell has created a new Skypod Express range: roof lanterns that can be ordered online and delivered to site in five to seven working days.

Builders on a tight schedule can choose from eight sizes and three colours, selected for the Skypod Express range because they are the most frequent choices among customers. Rather than having to supply a drawing or take measurements on site, builders can now plan extensions or conversions with the standard Express dimensions in mind and get the roof lanterns to site when needed.

“There are so many variables on jobs like this, from the availability of certain tradespeople, to customer requirements and even the weather,” says Eurocell marketing manager Chris Coxon. “The idea of Skypod Express is to reduce those variables: at least you know what roof light you want and when you can get it”.

Like all Skypod roof lanterns, the Express range is supplied in kit form. Designed to be installed ‘out of the box’, quickly and easily, they even have pre-drilled screw holes for accuracy and convenience. The sleek architectural design also means that there are no fiddly finials or crestings to fit.

Skypod’s popularity in the market is growing fast, thanks in no small part to its aesthetic appeal, especially when compared to other PVC-U systems. Its contemporary design creates extra head height and volume in a room, introducing additional natural light. And with U-values as low as 1.0W/m²K achievable, Skypod offers good levels of energy efficiency and comfort for the homeowner.

Skypod often makes a good alternative to aluminium-framed rooflights, and not only because they cost significantly less.
