Gaia Underfloor HeatingThe key question when it comes to underfloor heating, whether to opt for a wet (hydronic) system or an electric system?

When specifying heating in commercial buildings, underfloor heating is increasingly seen as the system that offers the levels of energy efficiency and comfort required. In design terms, underfloor heating provides the added benefit that, unlike radiators, it does not have an impact on interior aesthetics and layouts. However, which do you choose, wet or electric?
IMG_2329Both offer advantages and disadvantages. Our wet underfloor heating systems circulate water heated to around 45-50ºC through loops of pipe laid into the screed of solid floors or the joists of suspended timber floors. The low temperature of the water used makes these systems energy efficient and ideally suited to use with air or ground source heat pumps or district heating systems.

Devi UK images (144)Our electric systems use a continuous cable, either laid within the screed or supplied as a mat which is laid above the subfloor. Frequently thought of as the first choice in the retrofit market, because of the availability of systems that are less than 4mm thick. This allows them to simply be laid on top of existing floors, and installed near the surface to offer the advantage of a much shorter reaction time.

With market leading warranties being offered, such as the 20 year complete floor guard warranty for electric products, and a 30-50 year manufacturer’s warranty on the wet underfloor heating pipe. Our confidence in the products ensure complete peace of mind for the consumer.

Natural slate - CembritCembrit has ambitious plans to expand its operation in the UK. Cembrit’s claddings, building boards and corrugated sheets, in addition to its popular natural and fibre cement slate, will be stocked and sold from three hub operations in Reading, Normanton and Llandow (Nr. Cardiff). This bold move is supported by the creation of a 12 strong customer services department, including new recruits, based at the depots, reporting to a customer services expert, Steve Walden. Customer services is supported by a supply chain and logistics operation of a further 13 personnel at the depots and head office.

“Our impressive four unit Reading depot becomes fully operational in March”, says M.D. Thomas Heldgaard, while adding that, “this new structure of Cembrit - Cembonit Rainscreen Cladding 2dedicated customer service and logistics departments at each depot will improve availability and response to customers and provides a basis for long term growth”. New depot manager, Craig Barry adds “Reading is well located and will eventually include a training centre and showroom within easy reach of customers and prospects who want to learn more about Cembrit’s broad range. This facility will enhance the customer experience for all who deal with Cembrit”. Access to additional meeting rooms in Reading and London H.O. means London-based specifiers, can visit to discuss cladding projects and familiarise themselves with the Cembrit product range.

Cembrit’s new UK headquarters has been opened at the Thames Innovation Centre in Erith, Kent. The new headquarters is a result of the continued growth the company has been experiencing in the UK over recent years.  The premises provide the company with more efficient office space and a dedicated sample facility, which allows Cembrit to showcase its full range of roofing, cladding and corrugated sheet products.

Thomas Heldgaard commented, “2017 is a significant year for Cembrit’s expansion in the UK, as well as other areas.  We have recently opened a state-of-the-art factory in Hungary, expanded our product range and ventured into new markets.  The move into our new HQ comes at the same time as we increase our workforce. These developments support the growth we are experiencing and show our commitment to ensuring we are offering our customers the best service possible.”

Cembrit’s new supply chain department is located at Head Office where Michael Dunthorne and Katherine Eden, Supply Chain Coordinators report to Lyn Knox, Area Supply Chain Manager and support the logistics and operations personnel at Cembrit’s four depots. Cembrit’s Bovey Tracey operation remains as a specialist slate depot serving the west country.

image -074Enquiries from architects and developers about new apartment building developments has increased significantly over the past year or so for Eurobrick Systems. Traditional masonry construction is not always appropriate for some developments so alternative building methods are being sought.

Eurobrick is the UK’s leading brick slip cladding specialist and has supplied both its X-Clad and P-Clad systems for installation on residential developments. Both systems have been rigorously tested and have third party certification from the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and are also LABC (Local Authority Building Control) registered.

Euro Brick 15-5-15 0163X-Clad is lightweight, having an installed system weight starting from 36kg/m². It is easy to handle and cut on-site allowing for quick installation. The extruded polystyrene backer panel is available up to 100mm thick. With a thermal conductivity of 0.033W/mK, X-Clad can enhance the overall thermal performance of the development if required.

The P-Clad system has a 10mm thick cement particle board backer panel – designed to be fixed directly to battens or bracket systems. It was developed for use as an external sheathing where there is no requirement for insulation. P-Clad is certified for installation on buildings over 18m high (constructed with steel frame substrate).

Euro Brick 15-5-15 0027Eurobrick Systems has recently had an assessment report of the P-Clad system in combination with Nvelop helping hand and rail system and Xtratherm Safe-R Phenolic insulation board. This combination of materials was assessed by BRE Global against the performance criteria of BR 135. The assessment paves the way for P-Clad to be installed where greater insulation performance needs to be achieved at high level.

This assessment forms part of an ongoing programme at Eurobrick to ensure fire performance compliance with a range of different façade build ups incorporating P-Clad. This programme has arisen as a result of Eurobrick receiving a great number of enquiries from developers and contractors, for applications of P-Clad above 18m in various situations. Other assessments and variations should soon be in place.

Residential developments where X-Clad and P-Clad systems have been recently installed include; The Central at Iverson Road, West Hampstead and The Point at Gants Hill, Ilford. Both are large, new build developments of 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments.

Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Skypod Acute #3Building upon the success of the market-leading Skypod range of PVC-U skylights, Eurocell is launching its latest model – Skypod Acute. As the name suggests, the new addition features a steeper pitch: 350 in fact, a full 150 more than the current design.

The new 350 pitch is visually very different to the standard 200, making it suitable for more commercial applications such as schools, colleges, hospitals and offices, where this pitch degree is better suited to larger, multi-storey buildings. This market tends to be dominated by aluminium products, so the arrival of the new Skypod provides an aesthetically pleasing and cost-effective alternative.

Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Skypod Acute #2 Skypod Acute sports the same stylish, narrow glazing bars and generous sightlines for residential properties as the rest of the Skypod range and in its square format it now fits an even smaller aperture, allowing even more light into parts of the home that previously was not possible. In addition, no sidebars are needed on sizes up to 1.5m x 2.75m, so further improving sightlines and letting in more natural light. Skypod Acute is supplied with self-cleaning, temperature controlled glass in Blue, Neutral, Bronze and Clear as standard, with a U-value of 1.0W/m²K achievable.

Skypod’s success in the market is due in no small part to its good looks and aesthetics Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Skypod Acute #1especially when compared to other PVC-U systems. Plus, it offers better value for money than aluminium alternatives. Its contemporary design means that Skypod is the most effective means of boosting headroom and volume, while welcoming extra natural light into otherwise drab flat-roofed rooms. It is very easy to fit, with even screw holes pre-drilled for accuracy and convenience; and everything needed is supplied ‘out of the box’.

As with all Skypod products, Skypod Acute has a 10-year guarantee and is available in the full colour range of Anthracite Grey, Moondust Grey, Golden Oak, Rosewood and White – with a white interior finish as standard to maximise the light and airy feel. A further 30 colour options can be made to order in just three weeks.

Skypod Acute it available to buy in kits or bar length for Eurocell fabricators and is available to order now. Call 0800 988 3045 or visit eurocell.co.uk/skypod-acute

Dales diary of Eurocell enhancements

Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Dales Additions #3Eurocell – the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conservatory and roofline products – has reconfigured its popular Dales Collection range of composite doors to increase and improve aesthetic choice, security and resilience.

First, the company has introduced three new panel designs – the Elton, Hartington and Newhaven – which deliver ‘on trend’ farmhouse and contemporary styles. The three designs are complemented by six further glass patterns to further increase choice for the specifier, developer and end-user.

Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Dales Additions #2The additional door and glass introductions bring the total of Dales Collection front and back composite door combinations to 15 styles in 15 colours and 18 glazing options, from modern ‘chic’ to traditional Edwardian or cottage style.

The colours are in three groups: Contemporary, e.g. Anthracite Grey, Slate Grey and Moondust Grey; Standard, e.g. Rosewood, Golden Oak, Frost White and Berry Red; and Heritage, e.g. Eurocell Cream, Chartwell Green and Duck Egg Blue (all made to order). Dales Collection doors are also available with colour-matched weather bars.

Security assured

Second, with security and peace of mind very much on the agenda, not least following the introduction of Approved Document Q (AD Q) of the Building Regulations in October 2015, Eurocell has improved both the structural stability of its door panels and its locking hardware.

Eurocell BP Index March 2017 - Dales Additions #1AD Q sets out what it says are “reasonable standards for doors and windows to resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar by being both sufficiently robust and fitted with appropriate hardware” and effectively excludes non-PAS 24 products from the new build sector.

A new accredited five-point multi-locking system with adjustable keeps has been introduced, providing an improved weather rating that can now achieve up to a massive 1200 Pascals – a 50% improvement on previous tests. The new improved design also includes an increase of the outer GRP skin thickness from 2mm to 4mm.

The collection is now fitted with the Tri-Sis glazing cassette which can be deglazed internally without damaging the door panel or affecting the security performance of the door overall.

The locking system, plus the thickness and glazing modifications, means that the new doors are all now compliant with the requirements of AD Q; achieving PAS 23/24:2016 accreditation, which includes the challenging PAS 24:2016 ‘Cut Through’ test.

Low maintenance design

GRP door leaves obviate splits or cracks and are less prone to scratching and denting than steel-faced doors. A high-quality triple-seal frame system ensures Dales Collection doors can give outstanding performance for many years and two brush seals and a gasket seal prevent drafts and rain causing problems.

In terms of energy efficiency and sustainability, The Dales Collection composite doors range is ‘B’ rated as standard but ‘A’ rated is also available.

GRP-faced PVC-U composite doors continue to dominate the UK entrance doors sector; made popular by their greater security, thermal performance, fire resistance and aesthetic variety. The Dales Collection is the acme of these products: offering specifiers, housebuilders, social landlords and homeowners superb choice, performance and looks.

How to provide on-demand commercial ventilation without the upfront cost

DIGITAL CAMERA

When designing a new ventilation system for your commercial premises, one of the many aspects that need to be considered is the ongoing running costs of the system. Whilst a BMS (Building Management System~) offer the building manager the ability to control the building’s ventilation and remotely monitor the system’s performance, they can add significant cost to the ventilation system’s initial outlay. There is, however, an alternative that still grants the building manager and the occupants of the building demand-based ventilation without the large upfront cost of a BMS – a VAV System.

A Variable Air Volume (VAV) system can be used in conjunction with market leading commercial MVHR systems such as Airflow’s Duplexvent range. They enable the occupants and the building manager the ability to adjust the level of ventilation to different rooms or zones of the building based on localised changes in demand.

With air pollution making the news for the wrong reasons coupled with a drive towards increased energy efficiency it is key that you have a ventilation system that gives the occupants a healthy and comfortable indoor air environment whilst remaining energy efficient and cost effective.

Airflow - VAV DamperIntuitive VAV Dampers work by communicating directly with the MVHR system to adjust the system’s ventilation swiftly based on changes in ventilation demand. When combined with humidity or CO2 sensors, a VAV system can automatically respond to changes in room or zonal occupancy, independent to the other areas of the building.

This differs from many centralised MVHR systems that don’t use demand-based control. With these systems, the ventilation rate remains the same in each room regardless of occupancy level. This leads to one of two things:

  • Either the room is being unnecessarily over-ventilated, which is wasting energy and increases ongoing energy bills of the premises, or
  • Busy areas are not receiving enough ventilation and as a result, those in the room are breathing unhealthy air that can affect concentration and productivity levels and in worse cases can worsen respiratory issues. Furthermore, there is the chance that damp and mould can develop within the room, which as well as affecting the health of those inside the area, can damage the fabric of the building itself.

Whilst this functionality can be found within a quality BMS they can add significant cost to the development. By using a VAV system, you gain the level of control and responsive ventilation you’d normally receive through a BMS without the initial outlay that goes with it. With spending being increasingly held to account, why would you pay more when you can get a system that offers the same level of performance for less?

Pendle Forklift Services of Earby in Lancashire have chosen Boplan HP Plus pedestrian barriers to protect staff, trainees and visitors at their Forklift Training Centre. Made from flexible polymer, the HP Plus handrails are the strongest version of the Boplan FLEX IMPACT ® handrails. By adding a third extra horizontal rail and heavier posts, they safely separate and shield pedestrians from high-risk traffic zones where constant heavy manoeuvring takes place.

Pendle Forklift Services offer forklift sales and servicing, equipment hire and operator training. They have built up a solid reputation with their customers across the North West of England. Training can be provided either at the customer’s own site or at Pendle’s Earby training centre where instructors can provide a range of ITSSAR approved courses to ensure that forklifts are always used safely and correctly.

cofBoplan FlexImpact safety barriers are made from a polymer which is flexible, shock absorbing and highly impact resistant. Traditional steel barriers are very unforgiving and are frequently damaged by impacts as well as causing damage to whatever hits them. Replacing them is time consuming and expensive, particularly as much of the impact force will have been transmitted directly to the foundations often making straightforward replacement problematical.

On the other hand, Boplan FlexImpact barriers will absorb impacts safely and then return to their original shape and position with no loss of ongoing performance. They are ready and available to absorb the next impact whenever that occurs.  If it’s a vehicle such as a fork lift truck that crashes into the barrier, the damage caused to the FLT will be far less severe than if it hit a metal barrier. More importantly, the impact to the driver is reduced, minimising any injuries.

cofThe barriers come in modular designs so they can be installed exactly where required and more can be added as business needs change. All have been thoroughly, independently tested over a long period of time in order to comply with the strictest standards of safety.

At Pendle Forklift Services the HP Plus handrails feature a third rail and heavier posts that go the extra mile when it comes to shielding pedestrians from vehicle collisions. SG Swing gates were added to provide safe access through the barrier where needed. This is a safety gate that you can swing open on both sides and is self closing to ensure that access points remain permanently closed to unauthorised personnel.

The driving force in Boplan’s product design is the protection of people, vehicles, buildings and infrastructure. All Boplan products are designed, developed and manufactured to be sustainable and highly effective. Only the highest quality, high performance plastics are used with properties that far surpass the materials traditionally associated with plastic safety barriers.

The modular design means installation is quick and easy and products can be mixed and matched as required to provide the right level of protection at every point throughout the premises. Boplan also offer complete safety solutions, from floor markings and anti-slip protection, right through to safety gates, barriers and column protectors.

To ensure that the product is backed by an equally high standard of service, in March 2016 Boplan opened an office in Wolverhampton to deliver a truly local service for the UK. David Smith, Manager of Boplan UK has over 15 years experience in all aspects of safety barriers. He is enthusiastic about the future commenting “Boplan offer a wide range of quality and innovative products with specialist in-house design and development teams. I am looking forward to applying Boplan’s expertise and experience for the benefit of UK customers.”
