Roof integrated vs Bolt-on solar panels

On roof solar systems were the first generation of residential solar panels, consisting of a set of panels attached to the roof by a mount, which is bolted onto the rafters.

Although this type of solar system is well recognised throughout the UK, there is a growing demand for roof integrated solar panels. Here, we look at the benefits of in-roof, against on-roof systems.

Take a look at our roof integrated solar panels – Marely SolarTile®

5 reasons to choose roof integrated solar panels

Pest control

Birds nesting under mounted solar panels can be a costly problem for homeowners. As solar arrays work to their least efficient panel, pigeon droppings and nests that cover part of the panel have a negative affect on the output of the system.

Integrated roof systems, such as the Marley SolarTile®, offer a secure system that leaves no openings into the roofspace for birds or rodents to enter.

Aesthetics

Even though bolt on systems are now sleeker than ever before, the simple fact that roof integrated panels are concealed within the body of the roof makes them more aesthetically pleasing than the more bulky on-roof systems.

Roof integrated systems make it easier to pass difficult planning conditions and can even be used in heritage sites. For eg. Marley SolarTile® has previously been specified in the Cotswolds.

Maintenance

As previously mentioned, bolt-on systems can provide more access to birds and vermin. This can lead to regular maintenance costs from panel cleaning to gutter blockages. Plus, the more times the roof is accessed, the more chance of foot traffic breaking tiles on the roof, meaning through regular maintenance the overall cost of the systems can be much more than the installed price.

In-roof systems negate the need for regular maintenance and therefore extra damage to the roof. Marley SolarTile® is seen as a ‘fit and forget’ system, with self cleaning panels and no access points for birds or vermin.

Warranty

With bolt-on systems, notching the roof tile around the roof hook is required. Modifying the roof tiles for retrofit projects will invalidate the roof tile manufacturers warranty. Including tile damage from extra foot traffic on the roof.

Integrated systems fit seamlessly within the makeup of the roof and requires no modification to roof tiles or slates. We also offer a 15 year Roof System guarantee, however our Marley SolarTile® is backed by a 25 year manufacturers guarantee.

Safety

There are a number of design considerations when specifying bolt-on solar systems. The most notable being approximately 20kg/m² added weight to the roof structure which could have potentially serious consequences.

Marley SolarTile® replaces a section of tiles whilst performing as a lightweight, weathertight part of the roof with the strongest wind uplift in the UK market, meaning it can be used in all wind zones. AA fire rating as standard for complete peace of mind.

KEIM Mineral Paints have recently been Cradle to Cradle Certified® for 65 products making them the world’s most certified paint.

Many may see this as a huge major milestone in the company’s list of achievements, which of course it is, although the reality is, that KEIM are simply continuing to honour their mission to ‘protect the earth, its resources and one another in everything they do;’ a promise their founder pledged more than 140 years ago.

Cradle to Cradle Certifed®, so called as it assesses the whole circular economy and not from just manufacture to disposal, is the world’s most advanced, science-based standard for designing and manufacturing products. It assesses products in 5 comprehensive categories including renewable energy, material health, and social fairness.

Vanessa Fox, Commercial Director at KEIM Mineral Paints Limited, explains the significance of this most recent accreditation, ‘If walls could talk, I’m confident that the 5 million square metres of surfaces painted with KEIM in the UK would all pay homage to their breathability, durability, and richness of colour. KEIM have been eco-friendly since 1878. It’s not a new attribute that our paints possess, but the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Certification gives our specifiers, architects, and decorators that added confidence knowing that our products have been independently assessed and verified.’ Choosing a KEIM mineral based paint or colourwash to decorate new buildings or renovate or repurpose existing structures, makes for a healthy, eco friendly, sustainable and durable option.

KEIM interior and exterior paints are used across a wide variety of projects from historic, heritage, to highrise due to their many benefits. In fact due to their ecological, healthy living performance, and extraordinary durability, KEIM were the first manufacturer in the world to be certified to the Natureplus guidelines for exterior paints.

Vanessa Fox continues, ‘We feel honoured that so many iconic buildings are decorated using KEIM; the Portmeirion village in North Wales, Battersea Power Station, and retail stores such as Paul Smith for example. We have recently been used to renovate a remote coastal lighthouse on Alderney Lighthouse in Guernsey such is the resilience and durability of our products.

This most recent accolade is the latest in a string of accreditations and independent assessments which guarantee the quality and characteristics of the KEIM range. Many of their products are being specified due to their fire resistance capabilities on highrise buildings for instance or across hotel and leisure projects. Private home owners and decorating contractors are increasingly understanding the importance of using natural organic mineral paints, avoiding solvents or preservatives.

Fox concludes,‘65 of our products have Cradle to Cradle Certified®-Certificate Silver and the C2C Certified Material Health Certifcate™ Gold. That is a huge achievement, and testament to our resolve to play our part towards a healthier, more sustainable, resource- saving future.’

An MMC solution in masonry from H+H

Building Products Index Ltd Concrete, Concrete wall panels Leave a Comment

H+H Vertical Wall Panels are storey-high panels of aircrete that can be used to build a complete house shell within five days.
Vertical Wall Panels offer the speed of offsite with the familiarity of a traditional build. The panels are fabricated offsite and craned into place for a fast, panelised building system with the reassuring characteristics of a high-performance masonry structure.

Storey-high panels of aircrete are used to form the inner leaf of external walls, separating walls and internal partitions as appropriate.

Aircrete is a lightweight masonry material, combining proven durability and high acoustic, thermal and airtight performance with the ease of use that comes with a lighter material making it easy to cut and work with.

On site, Vertical Wall Panels are placed onto standard foundations and installed using H+H VWP mortar – a fast-setting and very strong mortar that forms a 2mm airtight joint. The entire ground floor of a house can be installed in a single day.

The overriding advantage of Vertical Wall Panels is the speed of build – and this is best demonstrated where the panels are used as part of a complete housebuilding package.

When combined with prefabricated timber floors and a prefabricated roof system, Vertical Wall Panels provide a system-build solution that can construct the superstructure of a house from foundation to roof within five days onsite.

This provides a watertight and airtight shell for follow on trades to move into, and one which is constructed using a material they are familiar with so no additional training is required for site workers.

H+H Vertical Wall Panels are manufactured in a range of heights with a width of 600mm and a thickness of 100mm. As aircrete can be cut on site, it is easy to accommodate window and door openings while providing infill sections as appropriate. This also gives the flexibility needed to adjust panels to cope with site tolerances and onsite modifications and means less product waste on site.

Design variations and detailing can be accommodated and, if required, Vertical Wall Panels can be used in combination with thin-joint large format blockwork.

Vertical Wall Panels are also lightly reinforced to facilitate handling and transportation without damaging the product. With the outer leaf off the critical path, cavity insulation can be installed to the complete façade, enabling it to be visually inspected for damage or gaps before the outer leaf is applied.

Separating walls are constructed as two leaves of Vertical Wall Panels with a minimum of 100mm full fill insulated cavity between. This, with effective edge sealing, will provide a zero heat loss party wall. Site acoustic testing has demonstrated that high levels of sound insulation can be achieved and this is reflected by H+H’s proprietary acoustic Robust Detail E-WM-31.

Building with H+H Vertical Wall Panels is not a new solution. In fact, it is an established Modern Method of Construction recognised by the NHBC and is part of the NHBC Accepts scheme. The system has been widely used across Europe for years and over 2,000 houses have been completed so far in the UK.

H+H Vertical Wall Panels combine the cost benefits associated with offsite construction with the reassuring familiarity and performance of masonry, offering an MMC system that stands up to the test of time.

DANFOSS MAKES LIFE EASIER WITH NEW INSTALLER-APPROVED ERC RANGE

Danfoss has introduced a new and improved range of energy-saving Electronic Room Controls (ERC) – the first to be co-created with installers to make their life easier. From its industry-standard backplate to the multiple cable access design and intuitive display wrapped in a full white exterior, the new ERC collection is designed for ultimate ease – from selection and installation to programming and everyday use. On top of all that, Danfoss has extended the warranty on the new range from two to five years and all models are 100% Boiler Plus compliant.

Danfoss listened to installers and used their feedback to develop an ERC range that is fast and hassle-free to fit and even more user-friendly, says Gareth Ash, Marketing Communications Manager at Danfoss. “We’ve involved installers in every step of the design phase,” he explains. “We believe this approach shows the importance Danfoss places on continuous dialogue with customers so we can reflect their needs in our products.”

With an ERC to suit all applications, Danfoss has streamlined the range to make choosing the right product for the job quicker and easier for installers. Models now include the TS710 and FP720 time switch and programmer respectively; the TP5001 range of programmable room thermostats; the RET2001 digital room thermostat range; and the RET1001M dial room thermostat.

The new Danfoss ERCs have a new industry-standard backplate featuring a multi-cable access design which allows side, top, bottom and rear access, making them much simpler to install. Depending on the model, other modifications include a new +1 hour booster button and indicator lights under each channel. Also, the old CH (Channel) button, sometimes wrongly identified by end-users as Central Heating, has been changed to read PR to avoid confusion. In addition, the previous 365-day service interval has been updated in line with regulations to a minimum of 400 days.

As part of the dynamic redesign Danfoss ERCs have also been given a smart new look and more user-friendly features. A full white design, including the backplate, is complemented by new aesthetically-pleasing, easy to read displays, plus a larger dial on RET models. The RET and TP ranges also have clearer detailing, while the FP720 now includes LEDs and clearer labelling of functions.

According to Gareth Ash the new installer-approved Danfoss ERC range offers a value proposition that is not only quick and simple to fit in new and retrofit projects but also raises the bar on energy saving.

Summing up, he says: “Research by the University of Salford shows that replacing a standard room thermostat with one that controls the boiler using load or weather compensation can deliver savings of 10% whenever the heating is on. So, with models that offer OpenTherm and on/off load compensation the new, easy to install Danfoss ERCs are the obvious choice for efficiency too.” To find out more visit https://www.danfoss.com/en-gb/campaigns/dhs/electronic-room-controls/#tab-overview

Heating professionals who want to check out the latest heating controls, including the new, improved ERC range, can join the 2022 Danfoss Installer Life Tour currently making its way around Britain. Installers can hop onto the tour bus when it comes to their area, get hands-on with new products and meet the Danfoss team. Cistermiser’s rEVOlutionary flushing control, EasyflushEVO, wins big at BMA Sustainability Awards

Cistermiser, the UK’s leading provider of commercial washroom water management solutions, is delighted to announce their win at the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) Sustainability Awards 2022 where EasyflushEVO won the Water Efficiency category, Judges praised EasyflushEVO for its “new and novel approach” to tackling water loss and eradicating the #leakyloo issue.

Richard Braid, Managing Director of Cistermiser, commented: “Cistermiser has spent more than a decade innovating and providing products that help FMs, local authorities, health trusts and building owners and it is so rewarding to have the team’s hard work on EasyflushEVO to be recognised by a panel of independent judges.

“We all know as an industry how much water is wasted through leaking toilets. According to experts Waterwise, a leaking toilet wastes between 215 and 400 litres of clean drinking water on average every day. Between 5 and 8% of toilets are estimated to be leaking, adding up to around 400 million litres of water leaking from UK toilets every day. Against a backdrop of the climate crisis and the Road to Net Zero, losses like these are clearly unsustainable.

“The EasyflushEVO is our latest addition to the Cistermiser product range, and its revolutionary flushing valve solves the problem of leaking toilet cisterns and saves 78,475 litres of water per unit per year. This was a huge inspiration for the development of the EasyflushEVO and although it might not single handily solve the ‘leaky loos’ problem we have in this country, it goes a long way to raising standards and awareness.

“The EasyflushEVO has revolutionised WC flushing by bringing together the previously unattainable benefits of non-touch and leak-free flushing. The patented flush design means there is no flushing seal below the waterline, so unlike traditional flush valves, it will not leak due to debris, scale, or seal degradation. We are, as a company, so proud to be contributing to the positive shift towards making this industry more sustainable.”

Tom Reynolds, CEO of the BMA, praises the work Cistermiser is doing: “Cistermiser has been committed to reducing water wastage and it is so exciting to see how far they are willing to push themselves through innovation to take product performance sustainability to the next level. It’s a tough ask, but with products like the EasyflushEVO, we can all contribute to transitioning this industry to do its bit for the planet, here at the BMA, we look forward to seeing what Cistermiser does next.”

It also follows an extremely successful sponsorship of Fix Radio’s Breakfast Show and a nationwide Toupret Tour, coordinated by Fix Radio, that enabled Toupret to successfully reach builders at merchants around the country, putting its Joint, Skim & Fill product directly into their hands.

This new partnership with Fix Radio will help Toupret to fill a gap in the building and construction market with its top quality, fast working range of products for jointing and skimming plasterboard, encouraging them to switch to its Joint, Skim and Fill range once and for all.

Fix Radio is the perfect partner to help Toupret reach tradespeople in the building & construction sector with over 146,000 listeners per week across DAB and online channels. This figure is ever increasing with total daily online streaming hours being up by over 40% since the station went national.

The new deal includes sponsorship of Fix Radio’s top of the hour 60 second sports bulletins, which air 13 times a day on the hour. In addition, Toupret becomes headline sponsor of the Friday Sports Kick off show, presented by Andy Hodgson.

The partnership includes a new spin on the Toupret 5KG challenge which proved extremely popular on the recent tours. Fix Radio presenters will each have a go at the Toupret Challenge, holding out 2 x 5kg bags of Toupret’s famous Joint, Skim & Fill for as long as possible. Their attempts will be captured on social media and the timings noted down and kept secret. Over 4 weeks, listeners will be able to guess which Fix Radio presenter achieved the longest time, on a special competition webpage. Then, at the end of 4 weeks, Andy will reveal which presenter won the Toupret Challenge.

Clement Windows Group complete a range of exciting steel window projects!

Clement Windows has manufactured and installed metal windows and metal doors at a range of exciting refurbishment projects recently, a Central London office block, two hydroelectric power stations in Scotland and a Surrey Convent among them!

The former Uniform Works in London’s Clerkenwell Green was refurbished by Stagg Architects, extending the original 13,000 sq ft building by an additional 7,000 sq ft, with a new roof extension, flexible spaces on the ground and lower ground floors and offices at the upper levels.

Steel windows and doors from Clement’s EB20 range were selected because it was very important that the new fenestration perfectly complemented the industrial aesthetic of the refurbished building, helping to flood each floor with light.  As the building is surrounded by other properties on three sides the addition of so much natural light is a real bonus.  The huge wall of steel windows on one side of the building includes a patterned glass which allows light to enter the building while also providing privacy for the neighbouring properties.

Clement EB20 steel windows were created for projects where a traditional steel window appearance is required.  Designed to replicate the appearance of original or existing windows while simultaneously providing all the advantages of 21st century technology, EB20 windows are manufactured from recycled steel and all the windows in this range have exceptionally slim frames.  The use of krypton filled glass units means this product achieves a ‘B’ Window Energy Rating, thereby complying with the latest energy ratings for replacement windows.  The slimmer insulated glass unit used increases the ‘shadow line’ which enables the replica window to be close in appearance to the original putty glazed windows which some projects demand.

Ben Stagg, Director of Stagg Architects, remarked:

“Clement Windows was selected following a lot of research, and ultimately because they were able to offer the slimmest profile metal sections.  The appearance of the glazing is critical to the whole building design so we worked closely with Clement to achieve the desired appearance, with great success.”

The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme refers to two hydroelectric plants, Bonnington and Stonebyres’ Power Stations, in Clydesdale, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.  The abundant supply of water from the River Clyde continuously spins the power stations’ turbines providing a reliable and sustainable source of renewable electricity.  Combined, they create enough electricity to power over 17,000 homes in the UK.

Recently refurbished by Drax Group, steel windows from the Clement W20 range with genuine T bars were chosen for the category ‘A’ Listed Buildings in order to provide as close a match to the original windows as possible.  A traditional, tried and tested robust window, designed in the 1960s but still in demand today, Clement W20 steel windows may be used in all types of building where strong, durable frames, efficient opening casements and hard wearing fittings are required.  Polyester powder painted in striking RAL 6005 Moss Green, Lodsworth handles complement the new windows with matching peg stays in Antique Bronze finish.

Clement made around 120 steel windows for the projects, including nearly 400 individual fixed lights, but the most beautiful is perhaps the enormous curved head windows on both sides of the buildings, which look spectacular and let in masses of natural light.  Commenting on the project, Drax Group Senior Civil Engineer, Anne Kerr, said:

“We are delighted with the service and quality of windows supplied and fitted by Clement.  The new steel windows fitted in the refurbished building look stunning and exceed our expectations.”

Ladywell Convent is the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) congregation, an international religious congregation of Catholic women.  Situated in the beautiful Surrey Hills, the Convent offers hospitality for returning Missionaries and visitors and is also the site of La Verna, a home for elderly sisters and those who support them.

An extensive refurbishment was recently carried out to the residential and conference buildings on the site ensuring their suitability for an aging group of sisters.  Two new support buildings were also constructed.

Side hung casements from the Clement Standard Metal Window (SMW) steel window range with genuine 12mm flat leads were installed in the new Greccio building, polyester powder painted RAL 9005 (Jet Black) semi gloss with the handles, hinges and peg stays powder coated to match the frames.

The Clement SMW window range is a stylish solution for a number of aesthetically sensitive historical projects.  SMW windows are used primarily for replacement work in Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings, where a suitable geometric match is required and double glazing is not an option.

Windows from the Clement EB20 steel window range with 12mm oval leads were installed in the Staff Building on the site, also painted RAL 9005.

Michael O’Brien from O&D Constuction said:

“Steel windows manufactured by Clement were the right choice because of their close match to the existing heritage windows at Ladywell Convent.  The team at Clement did a great job – they delivered the project on time and there were no issues.”

As these projects show, steel is one of the most versatile materials available for window frames and can be moulded into virtually any shape – when it comes to new steel windows, the only limit is your own imagination!

Clement Windows Group manufactures and installs an innovative range of steel windows, doors and screens, specialising in conservation work for both private residences and commercial projects.  The company also offers a range of conservation rooflights, available from stock or made bespoke to individual requirements, in either a tile or a slate profile.
