OSMA acoustic couplerWavin, the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic piping systems, has launched its new Osma Acoustic Coupler 4S125 – designed to address the problem of unwanted noise in soil stacks.

Through its innovative structure, the fitting absorbs structural borne sounds that can be caused by thermal movement, as well as contact between the stack and the structure of the building.

Featuring Osma’s Captive Ring-Seal at one end and Osma’s Deep Expandable Rubber Gasket at the other, the coupler can expand and contract as needed. This allows movement within the body of the fitting up to 18mm, releasing stress on the pipework.

Acoustic coupler - 2Installing the fitting on every storey of a building helps limit noise transfer between separating floors and walls. When installed with an access pipe fitting, installers and building control officers can also check the necessary expansion gap is present after first fix completion.

In a recent report, the NHBC Foundation found that 15% of all noise complaints from homeowners in detached properties were due to noisy pipework[1]. This is typically caused by the lack of allowance for thermal movement and contact with rigid brackets and linings within – an obstacle that can be overcome with the new Osma Acoustic Coupler.

Acoustic coupler - 1Steve Skeldon, Product Manager at Wavin, commented: “The Osma Acoustic Coupler 4S125 presents a real solution to the significant noise problems many homeowners get in their properties. This is great news for housebuilders, but also means plumbers will get fewer call backs to solve issues.

“As well as addressing noise, it also encourages better working practices as the fitting takes care of any expansion adjustment. This means no longer relying on the traditional manual practice of partially withdrawing the pipe or spigot end from a socket to create an expansion gap.”

Osma Acoustic Coupler 4S125 can be installed horizontally and vertically, and is now available to purchase. To find out more, visit your local merchant.

Balconette 2True advances in balconies and balustrading are rare, so Balconette is very excited to present its unique, breakthrough innovation – the Aerofoil Infinity Screen.

For too long, customers have had to compromise their designs for the sake of privacy and safety. Adding a privacy screen or extra height to regular glass balustrading had meant relinquishing that perfect design.
Balconette 1

But that’s all history now. Balconette’s team of design engineers have worked tirelessly to create a pass through privacy screen that effortlessly complements regular glass balustrading.

balconette 3Despite its ground-breaking appearance, this unique pass through glass balustrade system works very simply. Instead of being supported by a network of angled rails and posts, it cuts straight through the aerofoil handrail, providing privacy and protection from the elements without compromise of design.

Glixtone Fungi-Shield Anti-Mould & Black Spot Paint

Glixtone big-products2Glixtone Fungi-Shield is an interior washable HIGHLY decorative paint for ANY INTERNAL AREAS that are susceptible to Mould and Blackspot giving long lasting protection. We have not had a failure in 20 YEARS and is manufactured by our parent company, Carrs Coatings who are based in Redditch, Worcestershire.

Landlords face an on-going battle with properties and the infestation of mould which is both unsightly and a health hazard to their Tenants. Re-decoration is expensive, time consuming and disruptive. If Health Inspectors are notified this can also be a real problem to Landlords. Glixtone Fungi-Shield will not stop condensation or damp but when applied it is impossible for mould spores to survive on its surface as the active biocide is distributed evenly over the whole paint film and will keep killing the spores on contact. This is a LONG LASTING solution to what can be a never ending battle.

Manufactured in a different way to most other Anti-Mould Paints and uses a unique combination of our own biocides bonded to a ‘Thermal’ acrylic resin base. Most other products use an already made paint with a fungicide/algaecide added and mixed into this pre-made paint. This means that not all of the paint will carry the same amount of the fungicide which protects against mould growth when applied to a surface.

Glixtone big-products4Glixtone Fungi-Shield is BUILT as an Anti-Mould and Blackspot Paint with the manufacturing processes ensuring that the special acrylic resins and our biocides are both blended and bonded to each other. The process means that when produced every part of our paint has exactly the same amount of biocide giving a totally uniform distribution.

When used it will be noticed that the texture is that of ‘clotted cream’ and will flow from roller or paint brush with ease. It will also cover exceptionally well as it has a very high opacity rate. When applied the biocides will be active immediately and it may be noticed that very cold areas are slightly warmer due to the thermal resins that we use. After 5 days the surface will be fully washable making it ideal for Kitchens, Bathrooms, Living Rooms and Bedrooms etc.

We recommend Glixtone Sterilising Solution be used to remove any existing mould prior to the application of Glixtone Fungi-Shield. This is supplied in a CONCENTRATED form and when mixed with water will make 5 Litres of a Washing Solution. REMEMBER to leave this to dry (do not wash off ) in order for it to continue to work for you.

Glixtone Fungi-Shield

  • 20 years and never a failure
  • Excellent for any internal areas susceptible to mould
  • Highly decorative finish
  • Washable
  • Easy to apply
  • Environmentally friendly

The paint comes in White or Magnolia as standard in a matt finish, and can be tinted to a pastel shade by Carrs Coatings distributors. It is a high quality acrylic emulsion paint, and is easy to apply with a roller or brush. After five days, the painted surface will be fully washable, making it ideal for use in kitchens, bathrooms as well as bedrooms and living rooms.

This what one Customer has said ….

“As an experienced landlord and owner of a lettings agency, we were struggling to find a decorative solution to the problem of mould, which is usually caused by condensation.  We have tried several products however it wasn’t until we found Glixtone Fungi-Shield paint that we now have a viable cost effective solution that absolutely works.  This paint is now used effectively in the prevention of mould and black spot in all of our properties under management as well as my own.  I would wholeheartedly recommend this product to any end user looking to resolve mould and black spot in their homes”

The science behind roofing

A roof is a building’s last line of defence against the elements. But how efficiently it performs is a science in itself. Klober gives us an insight into the depth of their product development

Look up at a roof and what you see depends upon your perspective. If you’re in the construction business, your eye will naturally be drawn to the more technical aspects – why has a tile been chosen, how and where is the roof ventilated, what type of flashings have been used?? Professional interest goes beyond curiosity, as it’s the choices a roofer makes day in day out that secure his reputation.

One man who knows only too well the importance of roofing performance is Dirk Willen, who has been part of the Klober Product Development team in Germany for more than 20 years. Dirk takes up the story of the innovation, precision, testing and development behind each and every one of Klober’s products.

“Product development today can be so much more accurate and efficient than when I started back in the 1990’s. Then of course it was all still very much about using the drawing board and very basic digital facilities so it took some time to bring a project to fruition. Now, with CAD and 3D printing we can prototype much faster and make the development cycle a lot shorter.”

Whatever the drivers behind  product’s design, Klober has a highly experienced team that considers all of the many requirements it will need to fulfil. Weathertightness is the primary consideration of course and Klober has at its disposal the dedicated Technical Testing Centre of parent company Braas Monier. This has weather stations across the world, and from the data they collect it can feed in the most accurate climate intelligence to the profile of any new product. Wind speed, rainfall, UV exposure and temperature are critical factors as a roof in the southernmost part of France has very different demands placed on it to one in most of the UK. In Alpine regions you will find low pitch roofs with huge spans which need to be protected from the weight of heavy snow.

Klober wind tunnel

Klober wind tunnel

Dirk added, “Durability and accelerated weathering tests are carried out to ensure products will withstand the severest conditions and as one of the few manufacturers in Europe to have our own wind tunnel we can subject them to exhaustive testing in line with the latest legislation and norms. We then examine whether we have existing tools available for production or will need to manufacture new ones. Of course, products such as vents and dry fixing accessories are a very visible part of any building means so we also need to take appearance as well as performance into account. A contractor wants to use products that are easy to use and offer the best long-term performance, but these days a tile or slate vent must be unobtrusive too. This makes colour as important as the vent profile so we ensure that pigments used offer the greatest durability. A colour will often look quite different once installed and also depends on the material used to manufacture it. Colour matching is a real challenge as the shade will vary between grooves, recesses and raised areas – it’s all very subjective. To obtain the best consistency we use a light chamber with precisely defined wave lengths and then cross-reference against the human eye. It’s always a battle against the elements which, over time, will always take their toll.”

Before manufacturing of a new product begins, it is also subjected to an extensive programme of trials and testing. These are carried out to ensure compliance with international and local standards as well as with Klober’s own, more demanding specification. Each individual test programme is based on a ‘failure mode’ analysis and it is only when all the processes are complete that the product is considered fit for launch. At this stage, the expert knowledge and insight of contractors is invariably drawn on prior to the commitment to full production. Dirk added “We regard our customers as partners and it is up to us to ensure we make their lives as easy as possible. We very much depend on interaction with them to further our deep well of knowledge and expertise in roofing built up over more than 50 years.”

Klober is well-known and respected for the way that existing products and their performance are considered integral to any research. This ensures that established product ranges continue to be fully supported, kept up-to-date and benefit from improvements ahead of the market. Dirk concluded, “In terms of answering technical enquiries this invariably means Klober is able not only to offer a solution which others may struggle to provide but have the confidence to address problems arising from complex roofing designs”.

“Specials” drive Swedish Success for Howe Green

With Article 50 triggered the countdown to Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU) has begun in earnest.  Speculation and uncertainty appear to be the order of the day.  Deal or no deal? Who will dare to follow in our footsteps? Which European laws will we retain and which will fall by the wayside?

UK businesses could be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed and unsettled by our imminent departure from the EU. In reality many are seizing the opportunity presented by the low value of sterling to drive their export strategy.  In fact January 2017 was a record breaking month for UK exports – with reported sales of £49,404 million being the highest on record.

Howe Green PR PhotosHowe Green Ltd has been exporting floor, wall and ceiling access covers, hatches and panels for over three decades.  The company’s export success lies in the strength of relationships forged with a network of trusted distributors. With partners in Australia, North and South America, the Far and Middle East, Europe and Scandinavia Howe Green literally has the world covered!

One of the major success stories for Howe Green in the last few months has been the level of exports to Sweden.  Sweden is the UK’s biggest export market in the Nordic region.  Despite a population of just under 10 million the Swedish construction sector has a turnover of £50 billion and around half of the national wealth is spent in construction and infrastructure.

The sales have been made through Howe Green’s distributor – Elkington AB. Based in Stockholm, Elkington has been supplying a range of access and drainage products to customers in the building services sector for over 50 years.  Back in 1999 Elkington realised there was demand for a light weigh access cover that could complement the cast iron manholes covers they were already selling.  Following an introduction to Howe Green the two companies have worked closely ever since.

Elkington has built a reputation in Sweden for providing customers with exactly what they need to fulfil their requirements.  They believe that this willingness to identify a tailor made solution for an access challenge is what sets them apart from the competition.

Otto von Platen, Managing Director for Elkington explains, “Every day we are talking to consultants in the construction sector who are looking for advice and guidance on specifying products. They are rarely looking for a quick fix. They want a solution that is custom made to meet the specific requirements of their particular project.

The quality of the Howe Green access covers works very well in hospitals and airports – areas with high footfall.   A lot of our business is in the healthcare sector. Aesthetics and safety are the top priorities in such busy public environments and we know we can recommend Howe Green access covers with absolute confidence. The level of investment Howe Green has made in CAD software and CNC equipment means that our ‘Swedish specials’ are easily accommodated!”

Howe Green has recently supplied floor access covers for two high profile Swedish projects – the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital (NKS) in Stockholm and the National museum, which is a state backed restoration programme of one of the country’s premier art museums.

January 2017 was a record month for Howe Green exports to Sweden and both companies are committed to build on their continuing success regardless of what happens with Brexit.
