Linthorpe Developments, a commercial North-East property company, is rejuvenating a 26-year-old office block in Middlesbrough using embossed pearl grey PVC-U cladding from Deeplas, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of calcium organic PVC-U roofline products and building plastics.

The colour, pearl grey, is a big factor because it provides the right upmarket facelift for a property that is being transformed into the Cleveland Business Centre, a high-specification serviced office space for up to 55 start-ups and expanding enterprises.

Linthorpe founder and managing director Geoff Hogg says he chose Deeplas embossed cladding because it offered better value for money, with lower maintenance costs and speedier installation than conventional alternatives. “The architects would have liked cedar cladding but maintenance would have been an issue because cedar goes silver over time and I don’t want to have to have the cladding treated every five years”, he explains.

“Embossed cladding achieves a similar appearance but won’t lose colour. Also cedar would have been supported on tanalised laths which can ultimately rot, whereas Deeplas cladding uses plastic battens that won’t”.

In Mr Hogg’s view the original building was far too monolithic and the cladding at the gable ends will break up the block-like appearance with columns and bands of colour. Some 140 pearl grey embossed double planks, measuring 6m x 300mm, have been installed as columns and will be set off by 600mm deep horizontal bands of fluorescent green cladding.

The green cladding is constructed from 5m lengths of flat plank PVC-U board that has been powder-coated locally and, when completed, will be illuminated from within by powerful LED lights for an eye-catching effect that will make the building into a landmark.

Commenting on the project, Deeplas Building Products Director, Hazel Verschuere, said: “This is an imaginative example of how cladding can help transform a building into something of architectural and aesthetic merit, giving it a contemporary look and feel that will no doubt appeal to local businesses looking for office space.”

Designed for easy installation, Deeplas PVC-U shiplap cladding provides an attractive, low maintenance, weather resistant answer to replacing rotten timber cladding, concealing problem areas of brickwork or adding an interesting new feature to a property. The easy-fit, clip-together boards are available in a range of realistic embossed finishes to complement a range of styles from rustic timber-effect to crisp and contemporary. Companies have a duty under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure the health and safety of their own employees and anyone else, such as contractors, who may be carrying out this work on their behalf. This means that if you contract someone to work at height, you are legally bound to make sure that the person/company is competent and that the correct safety measures are in place before any work is carried out.

We recently helped Virgin Atlantic to ensure the safety of maintenance and inspection teams who needed to access the roof of ‘The Base,’ their global headquarters in Crawley, close to Gatwick Airport. The building provides a training and technical facility for cabin crews, pilots and engineers and includes an extensive flat PVC roof which is split over several levels. The building previously featured partially installed guardrails and failed demarcation systems which were deemed not fit-for-purpose. It therefore became necessary to have a roof top safety upgrade comprising a complete roof protection system that enables safe access to the entire roof.
Norland-based commercial property adviser, CBRE Group managed the project and contracted Safesite to specify and install a full guardrail scheme. After removing all existing guardrails, demarcation bases and chain, Safesite installed 900 Lm raked and standard KeeGuard® systems.

“Once we became aware that the previous systems weren’t performing correctly, we wanted to ensure that the new system was compliant with regulations, provided a full safety solution and wasn’t obtrusive to the design of the building” says Stephen Earl, Project Manager, CBRE (Norland). “Safesite is the expert in this area, and as they can offer the full service, from site surveys to installation, it was clear that they were the right choice for this project. The system that they have installed ticks all the boxes for us, and provides the client with the assurance that anyone accessing the roof will be safe.”

The KeeGuard® range includes standard vertical, raked, radiused and folding systems. The modular design features Kee Klamp® open-style fittings, which facilitate quick and easy installation of the horizontal rails and 100% recycled PVC counterweights. No welding, threading or bolting is required on site, which further speeds up and simplifies the installation process.

Suitable for installation on any flat roof up to a 10° slope, and compatible with concrete, asphalt, PVC membrane and felt roof surfaces, KeeGuard® can be used where a restraining wall is in place or where the rooftop is completely open around the perimeter. The flexible guardrail system can be used for retrofitting to older buildings as well as for new constructions.

The range is fully tested and either meets or exceeds current rooftop safety requirements, including EN13374 Class A, EN ISO 14122 Part 3 and BS 6399: Part 2 1995 Wind Codes.

Performance Characteristics: Dome has been tested for impact resistance to EN1873 Class SB1200. Stannah Dishes up the Goods in Wetherspoons

Running a Wetherspoons pub is thirsty work, but a Stannah Goodsmaster CD Plus (chain drive) goods attendant lift makes light work of it in the Leeds City Station outlet of this real-ale chain pub in West Yorkshire.

Lugging up to 1500kg between basement and ground level in this buzzing venue open up to 19 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Goodsmaster’s payload includes barrels of beer, ingredients for an all-day food menu, and the person lugging the goods in and out of the lift.

NDC launches Lunaglaze – new modular glass rooflight with next-day delivery

For 2017, the National Domelight Company has introduced a new brand of glass modular rooflight to its wide range of solutions. Lunaglaze is a standard specification, glass modular rooflight that is available in a range of 14 stocked sizes for next-day delivery.

Rooflights let three times more daylight into a property than an equivalent sized vertical window, with the Lunaglaze rooflight providing a stylish and cost-effective solution for optimising the use of natural daylight. Lunaglaze is NDC’s only glass modular rooflight that has two frame options: Lunaglaze PVC and Lunaglaze ALU.

Lunaglaze PVC is a fully-sealed, double-glazed PVC and glass construction with toughened and laminated clear glass. Meanwhile, Lunaglaze ALU combines high-performance, silicone-bonded, flat-sealed glass units with a fully-welded aluminium framework. This high-quality framework is powder coated and comes in a range of RAL colours, with RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey the standard colour. It provides a clean and minimalist finish from both an interior and exterior perspective. Practically, the flush external metalwork of the ALU option also ensures efficient rainwater drainage and avoids the problem of ‘water-ponding’ that can happen with alternative rooflight designs.

For optimum performance, the unit should be installed on a pitch of between 5-15 degrees. Both frame options are available as ‘top-only’ units to sit over a weathered builder’s kerb and can be supplied as a fixed unit or in manual or electric hinged options, which are perfect for controlling ventilation, specifically for humid areas such as kitchens.

The Lunaglaze PVC and ALU units can both be supplied as a complete unit with a 150mm PVC vertical upstand, while the Lunaglaze ALU can also be supplied with either a 150mm or 300mm splayed upstand.

Lunaglaze ALU has good thermal performance with a unit U-Value of 1.24W/m²K, and the PVC option delivering a U-Value of 1.26W/m²K. Sound insulation is also excellent.

Addagrip approved contractor Coatech Ltd were proud to install the surfacing around the recently unveiled RAF 47 Squadron Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Situated in Alrewas, on the edge of the National Forest, the Arboretum is home to over 330 memorials.

The new memorial, a representation of all the past, present and future members of No. 47 Squadron, features three pilots by sculptor Peter Naylor and is sited next to the River Thame. The design required a Resin Bound paved surround in a wave pattern using two contrasting colours that would be aesthetically pleasing but not detract from the sculpture.

Terrabound Resin Bound surfacing in Autumn Toffee and Terracotta blends were selected and Coatech Ltd installed the pattern, segregating each coloured area with an aluminium edging strip. The BBA approved Terrabound surface is porous, low maintenance, hard wearing, smooth underfoot and wheelchair friendly, making it accessible all year round.

The new memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum was unveiled on the 1st March 2017. The ceremony began with a service and a one minute silence, followed by the flypast of three Hercules aircraft, crewed by members of 47 Squadron, based at RAF Brize Norton.

The Terrabound installation was completed in February 2017.
