Delta Membrane Systems Limited, are delighted to announce the launch of their new Online Sump Pump Specification Guide, simplifying the process in identifying suitable sump pumps and storage capacities of chambers for groundwater, surface water and foul water packaged pumping stations.

Delta’s Online Sump Pump Specification Guides can be found at https://www.deltamembranes.com/product-categories/pump-calculators/.

Drainage capacity and sump pump performance is an essential element in determining the success of drainage and pump station design, to simplify the process we have created a tool which assists the process.

3 Easy Ways to Access Product Technical Information

We’ve split our Sump Pump Specification Guide into three sections:

Simply input the technical information to the various fields of the Specification Guide and the Specification Guide will highlight a product suitable for the drainage requirements of your project.  Pump selection is based on optimum/ideal performance of the sump pump based on the pump’s performance curve.

From this, simply click on the product selected to access full product functions your design team and product team members need.  All products have links to clear and easily readable and downloadable install guides, product data sheets, CAD details, brochures, fabrication sheets and “how to” video guides.

Basement Drainage ‘sump pump systems’ should be engineered to cope with worst-case scenario of water ingress.  We’ve been providing customers with high-quality basement drainage solutions for nearly 30 years. In that time our friendly, knowledgeable team has been offering technical advice, free specifications, and a helpful flow calculation service to our customers.

There are lots of resources on Pump Station Design, but this step-by-step Specification Guide will provide you with the tools and strategies you need to create a reliable, data-backed approach for your project.  Knowing which pump(s) work best for your project can simplify how products are specified, giving you confidence knowing that you’re not simply guessing.

Whilst Delta’s new Sump Pump Specification Guide is a great feature, we’ll still be offering the same in-person services for which we are renowned for.  Delta’s team of Pump Specification Technicians will be on hand to assist and facilitate correct specification of sump pumps and packaged pumping stations.  Every product specification provided by the Delta team is based on technical requirements, engineering specifications, and other details that are specific to the particular project.

A touch of class: Stannah helps modernise historic entertainment venue

It can be said that every entertainment venue has a sole purpose: to transport their patrons into another world where their cares can be forgotten, if only temporarily. For those venues that wish to transport their guests to a bygone era of glitz and glamour, it can be challenging to strike the right balance between modern conveniences and historical preservation.

Lifts are a regular focus of this challenge in heritage buildings, and Blackpool Winter Gardens is no ordinary building. First opened in 1878, this Grade II Listed 3,000-seater entertainment complex has entertained countless millions throughout the history of the popular Lancashire seaside resort town. Like any other building with more than one level, the requirement to safely and reliably transport people from one floor to another, especially those with limited mobility, is an essential one.

The challenge

One of the lifts at the Blackpool Winter Gardens, located right next to the historic Opera House theatre, had been in desperate need of repair for a long time. Used to transport patrons up to the upper Circle and Balcony seating areas, it is an essential piece of infrastructure to allow step-free access to these sections. The existing OTIS passenger lift dated back to somewhere around the 1950s was only safely able to carry 4 persons or a maximum load of 380 kg, and looked very dated with its plain oak panelling.

The existing lift dated back to the 1950s and in looks did not quite match up to the richness of its surroundings.

Since the lift could not be repaired due to some of its components becoming obsolete, the lift had been long out of service until Stannah was selected to undertake a complete replacement.

“Stannah was the ideal choice for the replacement of our Opera House passenger lift, which had been out of service for over 12 months. Working with Stannah has been so easy, and constant communication was kept from start to finish.”

Philip Jackson, Head of Maintenance, Winter Gardens Blackpool

The client

Winter Gardens became a popular trend in the late 1800s in numerous seaside resorts and spas, and were so called because they offered the possibility of extending the fun and entertainment of the summer season into the cold and darkness of winter. The Winter Gardens entertainment complex in Blackpool includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities and has been rebuilt and added to many times over the decades.

The beautiful Art Deco interior of the Blackpool Winter Gardens Opera House, reconstructed in 1939, oozes sophistication and character.

The opulent interior of the Opera House, which seats a total of 3,000 people.

The Opera House is one of the UK’s largest theatres and continues to attract some of the world’s biggest touring shows and events to Blackpool. The iconic theatre has seen a host of famous stars on its stage since it first opened in 1939, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey.

The result

The project manager from Stannah, Lee Mahoney, worked in close collaboration with the Winter Gardens’ head of maintenance Phil Jackson to design a lift that would complement the iconic architecture and decor of the first and third floors. Stannah also designed the brass plates on the landings to give a glamorous look to the control panel with its retro push buttons.

The new Stannah lift features reflective surfaces to add the perception of depth to the floor space of the lift, as well as touches that reflect the glitz and glamour of the Arts and Crafts Movement, such as brass panels and handles.

Stannah provided a new Xtralift passenger lift, which is much more energy efficient than its predecessor. It offers a capacity of 8 persons or a maximum load of 630 kg.

Although there were some challenges involved in the installation process, such as large heating pipes which had to be removed in the shaft, and having to avoid noisy works during opera and cinema shows on certain days, these issues were worked around with good communication on both sides, and the installation was completed in 8 weeks.

“Stannah has been great to work with from start to finish. They have impressed us so much that I am once again working with them on our replacement program for another two lifts.”

Philip Jackson, Head of Maintenance, Winter Gardens Blackpool

With its 150-year history, Stannah truly understands the importance of heritage, and with their Stannah Promise, also live up to their company values on a daily basis to offer Blackpool Winter Gardens the perfect mix of quality, safety, sustainability, reliability and cost-effectiveness.

Renovate lime render without the need to remove and replace

Building Products Index Ltd Filler Leave a Comment

View the Toupret entry on BPindex

Lime render repair is usually a tricky job. Traditionally, it requires having to completely strip the wall of the existing render and replace it with two or three coats of new. However, fillers can provide a revolutionary solution.

Lime render is often found on older properties, and was used in the past to cover up the various different materials used in construction, such as stone, bricks and rubble. But the lime also allows the substrate to breathe, and protects against the weather. There is also an aesthetic element to its design, especially with certain decorative finishes that can be achieved with sponging or brushing and so, for these reasons, lime render remains a popular exterior finish.

Lime render renovation can be a complicated task, as it requires an initial scratch coat to assist with the adhesion of further layers, which are then covered with a finishing top-coat. With a drying time of several days between each coat, it can be a lengthy process, requiring much skill. And this is where an exterior filler can revolutionise the work.

If a complete covering of the lime render is required, an exterior filler for skim coating can be used, eliminating the need to entirely strip back the old render. Toupret offers two products, Skimcoat Filler and Ready To Use Skimcoat Filler, that can be used to cover over the damaged render to achieve either a smooth finish, with the use of a trowel, or a textured finish, when also using a brush.

Of course, diagnosis of the surface must first be carried out, as it is essential that it is hard, cohesive, clean, sound and dry for a filler to adhere to and perform efficaciously.

If any repair work is required before covering, other fillers can also assist, and still relieve you of the need to remove the existing lime render. For example, all Toupret exterior fillers can be used to fill non-structural holes and cracks in the render and can then be covered with a skim coat filler. Some fillers can adhere to old paintwork, some even to damp, and some can even be used to perform skim coating jobs to localised areas of the render.

The versatility of exterior fillers therefore enables repairs to be made, as well as offering a complete renovation solution that saves time and effort, and makes lime render repair no longer feel like such a difficult job.

A Cornish brewery has moved into renovated premises that give visitors a whole new experience of watching the creation of their favourite beers with Crittall Windows playing a crucial role in the new concept.

Verdant Brewery took over a rundown warehouse on a Penryn industrial estate and, in addition to installing the brewing vats, created 400 sq. metres for staff offices and a space for public use, dubbed the Taproom.

The new interior was created around a steel-framed installation with Crittall Corporate W20 windows providing a light and contemporary area where visitors can have a beer and something to eat while enjoying views through to the working brewery, a paramount consideration of the client.

In addition, The Taproom provides a mezzanine balcony overlooking an area that can also be used for entertainment from a DJ or with live music. The design was produced by locally-based architects Zelah Studio.

Said architect James Collins; “We used the W20 system as it allowed great flexibility and a quality industrial look that the client wanted. Large expanses of the glazing allowed us to create views of the brewery from all spaces.”

Eurocell is working with a unique, not-for-profit window and door manufacturer. Created to provide social value, it is making a positive contribution to its local community and delivering commercial success.

Bradford-based Industrial Services Group (ISG) is a PVC-U window and door manufacturer with a difference.

Originated by Bradford Metropolitan District Council in 1997, it is a social enterprise designed to create career opportunities for local disabled and disadvantaged workers and supply high quality product solutions for social housing, care homes, and hospitals across the Yorkshire area.

However, their roots stretch back much further, with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) establishing a support service to help incapacitated service people returning from World War 1 back into employment.

Having teamed up with Eurocell four years ago, ISG is enjoying commercial growth and healthy not-for-profit revenues that are reinvested into the business. Its success is built on delivering the very best customer experience; one that helps generate repeat business, customer loyalty and, in recent times, the emergence of new prospects in the new build sector.

Darren Shaw, General Manager from ISG commented: “Around half of our workforce has a form of disability or comes from a disadvantaged background. We are an inclusive organisation and offer career chances for many who would be otherwise excluded from the workplace. We tap into their enthusiasm, skills and commitment and it’s rewarding for everyone to see our people develop, gain self-confidence, and go onto thrive in a busy commercial environment.”

The complete solution

Eurocell is ISG’s exclusive supplier of extruded profiles from which the company designs, manufactures, and installs a wide range of window and door solutions. As well as guaranteeing a high-quality PVC-U profile, Eurocell’s technical support team is also on hand to offer advice and guidance around more complex specification issues such as helping to undertake wind calculations on proposed higher rise structures.

ISG’s service offering also includes in-house surveying capacity to ensure that prospective orders are seamlessly managed from initial enquiry to final installation.

Journey to zero waste

And the company is also on its own sustainability journey as Darren Shaw, explains: “ISG is committed to a zero waste to landfill policy which means we are looking to recycle post-consumer waste and PVC-U offcuts rather than simply sending them to landfill facilities.

“This is part of our ongoing journey in addressing our environmental responsibilities and helping play our part in tackling the climate emergency. We recognise Eurocell’s outstanding recycling and sustainability efforts which underpin how it operates, and, together, we will continue to enhance processes and procedures to make a positive contribution to the world around us.”

ISG is making a difference within its local community, both in terms of creating rewarding career paths and delivering a quality-led PVC-U window and door service that is valued, respected and, best of all, in demand.

With the motivation and potential to see the enterprise continue its growth trajectory, the management, and employees at ISG are set to generate further social and environmental value for the people of Bradford.

Jaga UK, designers and manufacturers of innovative, sustainable heating, cooling and ventilation systems, has begun building work on their new, low-carbon facility in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

The UK arm of the global company, headquartered in Belgium, has been based in Ledbury for over 25 years and has expanded steadily during that time. With the growth in the renewables sector, particularly the rise in popularity of heat pumps, the company feels it’s an excellent time to relocate to a new home that fully represents their eco-credentials and enables them to offer new services to customers as well as the wider community.

The company has named the future building ‘Kriekels House’, after the company’s founding family. Jan Kriekels, son of Jaga’s founder, is still at the helm of the company today as CEO and visionary.

Kriekels House has been designed with a fabric-first approach to maximise energy-efficiency and minimise carbon emissions. It will showcase the company’s heat pump radiators and low carbon heating and cooling technologies which will all operate with ground source and air source heat pumps. Electricity will be generated using solar PV and electric car charging points will be available for staff.

The new facility will be home to Jaga’s UK warehouse, offices, and training facilities where they plan to run training courses for HVAC engineers, installers, contractors and consultants. It will be open to students too, enabling them to learn about renewable energy systems, see the technology in action and get hands-on with the kit.

Jaga UK’s, Managing Director, Phil Mangnall said:

“We’re very excited to be building this new facility that embodies our company ethos – centred around sustainability, creativity and social responsibility.

Kriekels House gives us the opportunity to open our doors to the HVAC community. We’re looking forward to inviting customers and the wider industry to experience Jaga. The whole HVAC set up including our plant room, heat pumps and emitters will be accessible to visitors so we hope it will be a great showcase for low temperature systems and renewable energy technologies.”

Jaga is hoping to move from their current location into their new facility next summer.

ABOUT JAGA UK

Jaga are pioneers in designing innovative, ecologically sustainable heating, cooling and ventilation systems using less energy and fewer raw materials, ensuring a better indoor climate without damaging the outdoor climate.

Clement Windows Group was selected to manufacture and install almost 1,000 double glazed steel windows at the India Buildings in Liverpool.

The India Buildings is located on Water Street in the centre of the city’s financial and business district.  Designed by architects Arnold Thornely and Herbert J Rowse in response to a competition to design an office block which was judged by the great English architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, it was built between 1924 and 1932 for the Blue Funnel shipping line.  The building’s design is influenced by the Italian Renaissance style and it has several features of the American Beaux-Arts style.

Having sustained damage during World War II the building was restored to its original state after the war under the supervision of Rowse, one of the original architects.

In 2017, the Grade II* Listed Building was purchased by Legal & General and it was announced that HMRC would base a regional centre there.  Renovation works commenced with the focus on creating modern, comfortable office space while retaining the heritage features of the building.

Clement was chosen to manufacture and install the new double glazed steel windows which match the original single glazed metal windows and improve thermal performance and energy use within the historic building. Almost 1,000 windows from the Clement MW40 range were specified, polyester powder painted RAL 9106 (White).

Alex Harrison of architects Falconer Chester Hall said:

“We had the pleasure of working with Clement on the steel window replacements of the India Building refurbishment project.  Their performance in every aspect of the work was outstanding and we wholeheartedly endorse them for any future contracts of a similar nature.  One specific area where Clement excelled during the early stages, was the support we received from them during our discussions with the city planners regarding the bespoke windows.  Their contribution proved very useful in moving matters forward and the end result is exceptional.”
