Newton Waterproofing, a leading supplier and designer of waterproofing solutions for large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects, teamed up with specialist contractor ASF Waterproofing to successfully repair leaks inside the Limehouse Link Tunnel in East London.

The 1.1-mile tunnel, a vital artery connecting The Highway to Canary Wharf in the bustling London Docklands, was experiencing water ingress that required immediate attention, and prompted the main contractor to call upon the expertise of Newton Specialist Contractor ASF Waterproofing, recognised for their proficiency in injection resins and structural repairs.

Understanding the critical role the tunnel plays in London’s infrastructure, ASF Waterproofing worked alongside Newton Waterproofing Systems to swiftly find a suitable solution, and following a thorough investigation, they opted for Newton’s PC Leakinject Uni 6816 E resin, specifically designed for sealing gaps, cracks or leaks in structures experiencing high levels of water ingress.

Adding another layer of complexity was the location of the leaks near the tunnel’s roof, necessitating night-time closures of the tunnel to ensure the safety of workers and minimise disruption to London’s traffic flow. With only a four-hour window each night between 11pm and 4am, the ASF and Newton teams utilised cherry pickers and scissor lifts to access the area and inject the resin.

“Despite the challenges presented to us with this project, ASF managed to successfully waterproof the Limehouse Link Tunnel using Newton’s specialist polyurethane injection resin” commented Shaun King, Director at ASF Waterproofing. “This resin was ideal for this project, due to its ability to react quickly with water to effectively seal the leaks.”

Newton Waterproofing’s Managing Director, Warren Muschialli, added: “The Limehouse Link Tunnel is a vital part of London’s transportation network, and we are proud to have played a role in its continued operation. This project showcases our ability to provide innovative solutions and expert support for even the most demanding infrastructure projects.

“With Newton’s comprehensive waterproofing solutions and ASF Waterproofing’s skilled application, the Limehouse Link Tunnel can now withstand the elements and serve London’s commuters for years to come.”

The creation of an ultra-modern Teaching Building as a new core to a long established school in Oxfordshire, has included the installation of custom designed and manufactured stainless steel sinks, worktops and splashbacks and other units from GEC Anderson for several of the different technical spaces.

The Tudor Hall School, originally founded in 1850 by the Rev TW and Mrs Todd at a site in Salisbury, has been at its present location at Wykham Park in Banbury since World War II, while the past decade has seen some £15 million invested in ensuring the Independent Girls Boarding and Day School offers the best possible facilities.

The Birmingham office of ADP Architects has been responsible for the design work on this latest project, while Clegg Construction Ltd of Nottingham was the main contractor carrying out the work. Acting as a specialist sub-contractor, GEC Anderson conducted site visits and liaised with the project team in order to ensure its custom fabrications met the schools health & safety as well as technical and teaching requirements.

GEC Anderson also worked closely with Tudor Hall Bursar, Neil Farquhar to ensure its site installation visits in no way interfered with the academic activities as lessons continued throughout normal term time.

One of the architects involved with the project from early on commented “The GEC Anderson sinks, work-surfaces and other fabrications were specified for the Food Technology Area as well as units for the Ceramics and Textiles rooms. The new centre opened on schedule last Easter in time for the start of the 2018 summer term and everyone involved has been pleased with the results.”

Introducing the new Wavin Tigris Manifolds

Wavin have added a new range of manifolds to their innovative Tigris Press fit range. With options for 2 to 4 ports, the range includes standard and valved options. The manifolds give easy access to install in service cupboards or accessible areas for ease of use. Additionally, the manifolds give extra flexibility meaning it can be installed under a bath for hot and cold feeds to baths, sinks, and showers.

The introduction further enhances the Wavin Tigris K5/M5 press-fit system of multilater composite pipe (MLCP) family. With a testing system, the Tigris K5/M5 has a range of benefits that make it the go-to product for plumbing installations involving drinking water, chilled water, heating systems, and underfloor heating systems. The Tigris K5/M5 is designed to prevent errors made during installation, resulting in a reliable and durable connection that has been tested beyond the requirements for a 50-year lifetime.

Pipelines have been historically tested using water pressure, a method that comes with great risk. The greatest being legionella, a water-borne bacteria that can cause a potentially fatal lung infection in those who breathe in infected water droplets. Evidence suggests that this bacteria could develop if pipes aren’t effectively dried after water-pressure testing. The on-going concern for those involved in building large-scale projects has led Wavin to help combat the issue. The Tigris K5 system uses air-pressure testing, which tests the pipes effectively without the risk of droplets developing bacteria.

The Tigris system also employs an 80-decibel pressure leak alert, which sounds a high-pitched whistle when a leak is detected – enough to be heard in the loudest environments. Designed by specialist engineers at Wavin, this is the world’s first acoustic leak alarm, setting the Tigris K5 firmly apart from any other systems on the market.

Technical Drawings (Structural Waterproofing) – Delta Membranes

Cold Applied Liquid Waterproofing – Delta Membranes

Casestudies – Delta Membranes

British Standard BS 8102:2022, Section 6.2.5 in particular – places emphasis on ‘Continuity of Waterproofing Protection’ advising that the waterproofing protection should be continuous from DPC level (150 mm above ground) and throughout the below ground structure.

Continuity of Waterproofing Protection from a design perspective is an important consideration, waterproofing designers are required to understand product combinations and the characteristics of systems from the outset.  Along with knowledge of product features and properties, designers are further faced with integrating these products into buildings and structures in a way that achieves a continuous and seamless waterproofing protection.

Additionally, other factors must be allowed for, such as the construction process, identifying the multitude of ways in which the waterproofing solution could be compromised and proposing methods for reducing and mitigating risk.  For new structures it is recommended that the structural design, waterproofing design, and construction processes are considered together.

Cold Applied Liquid Waterproofing Systems are becoming an increasingly popular choice not only for continuity of waterproofing but also as a sustainable construction method, due to the durability, versatility, and reliability of the products.

Benefits of waterproofing with liquid systems:

  • Seamless – filling cracks, gaps, and voids in substrates
  • Fully bonded
  • Greater ability to detail complex convoluted shapes
  • Strength and stability
  • Fast installation
  • Safe application – no need for heat
  • Rapid curing time and excellent adhesion to numerous substrates
  • Suitable for a multitude of waterproofing requirements, not only roofs
  • Compatible with other waterproofing combinations (such as external drainage and protection layers).

Each cold applied liquid waterproofing system comes with its own unique benefits, from crack-bridging to being suitable for heavily trafficked walkways.  It should be noted that cold applied liquid waterproofing is a great solution for ‘positive’ side waterproofing (external waterproofing system).

From flat cold roofs to balconies and terraces, retaining walls/basement walls to civil applications, cold applied liquid waterproofing is a great sustainable, cost-effective solution.

Delta Roof Guard

Delta Roof Guard is engineered to provide a fast curing, flexible, elastomeric solution for cold liquid applied waterproofing applications.  Delta Roof Guard CP and QC bonds directly to substrates, providing a seamless, UV-stable membrane that does not delaminate. Due to its flexible nature Delta Roof Guard follows the contours of any shape allowing for intricate detailing.  Once cured, Delta Roof Guard achieves a seamless finish with no joints or breaks. Offering rapid curing even in winter months.

Delta Roof Guard also comes with a comprehensive range of primers, all able to aid the adhesion of the liquid applied membrane system to the relevant substrates. Delta Roof Guard cold liquid waterproofing is lightweight, has great elasticity, meaning that it will absorb structural movements, whilst compensating for shrinkage or expansion due to changes in temperature. The ease and speed of application makes Delta Roof Guard Cold Liquid Waterproofing the perfect partner for complex positive side waterproofing projects.

To celebrate the occasion the Delta team took time out to reflect on their achievements and cut into a delicious celebratory cake!

In its first 12 months, the Delta Pumps Distribution Hub has truly established itself as a practical yet welcoming ‘go-to’ venue for all things basement drainage and basement pump solutions.

Kevin Dodds, Delta’s Managing Director said “We couldn’t be more pleased with how Delta Pumps and its Basement Drainage Distribution Hub has established itself within the industry in such a short space of time.  Jason, Luke, and the team have been amazing and have worked tirelessly to bring together so many systems and solutions under one roof.”

“Delta’s dedicated Basement Drainage Distribution Hub highlights our commitment to responding to the ever-increasing demand for quality products in our industry and in single source accountability. Our continued investment into products under this single source accountability is laying the foundations for future growth, creating more employment opportunities, and confirming our position as an industry leader.”

What are basement drainage systems?

A key component of a Type C, Drained Protection System is the drainage system.  Often referred to in the industry as ‘basement drainage’ or ‘basement drainage systems’.

Type C, systems are water management systems.  The Type C System manages water that penetrates the external shell of a structure by collecting it in a cavity form between the external wall and an internal lining/wall.   There is permanent reliance on this cavity to collect ground water seepage and direct it to a suitable discharge point.   For Type C, Cavity Drainage Systems to function as intended, water ingress should be removed by gravity drain or mechanical pumping.

The purpose of a sump chamber is to collect and discharge (to a suitable evacuation point) any water ingress which has collected in the Type C, cavity drained protection system.

CS LOUVRES PROVIDE AIRFLOW AND RAIN DEFENCE FOR A SUSTAINABLE DATA CENTRE

Building Products Index Ltd Louvres Leave a Comment

Visit the Construction Specialities website

Construction Specialties’ (CS) rain defence louvres are providing airflow and maximum rain defence for one of the largest data centres in Europe.

Following a successful acquisition of Hydrokraft AS in 2022, Arkon Energy has started the development of additional infrastructure, aiming to harness the facility’s total capacity potential. Located in Glomfjord, Norway, the centre runs entirely on eco-friendly, economical hydroelectric power.

The focal point of the project was the implementation of a rain defence louvre system that would not only provide efficient intake airflow but also withstand the significant wind load requirements typical of this region. The louvre system had to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, blending well with the existing envelope design. An additional consideration was selecting a finish that would ensure longevity without impacting cost or lead times.

After a thorough consultation process, the RSH-5700 horizontal bladed rain defence louvre from CS’ architectural range was selected. This model offered the ideal balance of performance (class A 3 up to 3.5 m/s), cost-effectiveness, and visual appeal for customer’s requirements. The final finish choice was a standard polyester powder coat in matt RAL 7035, closely matching the facility’s cladding panels. The finish was warranted for 20-years (subject to a regular maintenance schedule), following an assessment based on site’s location.

The modular nature of the RSH-5700 louvre system facilitated ease of installation, a crucial factor given the project’s scale and location. Its robust design ensured durability and longevity, vital in a region prone to high wind loads. Installed at the building’s front, the system covers approximately 580m2, serving as the primary airflow intake. This solution effectively met the dual challenge of high-level performance and architectural integrity.
