Given the clear push on sustainability and in light of the Future Homes Standard, Tata Steel is pleased to introduce a ‘solar ready’ enhancement to the Confidex® Home Guarantee, helping developers, contractors and self-builders deliver homes built for the future.

With the countdown to Net Zero well underway, there is a big emphasis on how we can all improve our sustainability and lessen our carbon footprint. The Future Homes Standard forms a key part of this; a new set of standards that will complement the Building Regulations, developed to ensure new homes are future-proofed with low carbon heating and world-leading energy efficiency.

Solar panels will have an important part to play in the delivery of this greener future, with the UK’s solar sector expected to double by 2030. As such, Tata Steel, the global steel manufacturer, has taken the decision to enhance the 25-year Confidex® Home Guarantee for the residential sector, making it ‘solar ready’.

The Confidex® Home Guarantee is valid on standing seam residential roof and wall systems manufactured from Tata Steel’s Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and available via its four UK supply chain partners: Tata Steel (Colorcoat Urban®), Catnic (SSR2), Euroclad (Vieo) and EQC (Seamlap/Seamlock).

DSC_0401Originally launched in 2019, the revamped Confidex® Home Guarantee offers the same renowned protection against paint peeling on the pre-finished steel product for a period of 25 years, regardless of where the property is located (coast or inland); in addition to now allowing homeowners to install Clip and Fix Solar Panels on their roofs. Solar panels can be installed at any point during the 25-year guarantee period, without prior consultation from Tata Steel.

Tata Steel’s new ‘solar ready’ Confidex® Home will help developers and contractors in their delivery of greener homes, with the roofs ready for future solar panel installations. What’s more, the Guarantee enables developers to offer added peace of mind to prospective home buyers, with an additional 15 years on top of the 10-year NHBC guarantee.

While, as a result of the Confidex® Home Guarantee being a direct agreement with Tata Steel, homeowners can benefit from the assurance that, in the unlikely event of a material fault, it can be promptly resolved and rectified, without the need to go via the supply chain or their home insurance. The Guarantee is also transferrable in the event of the property being sold and is written in accordance with consumer law.

Speaking about the revamped Guarantee, Dr Peter Barker, New Product Development Manager at Tata Steel, said: “In the run up to 2050, the UK is changing the way it builds the homes of the future. As part of the Future Homes Standard, homes built from 2025 will have to produce 75% to 85% less carbon emissions, compared to homes delivered under the current regulations, with the installation of solar panels becoming increasingly popular.

“As such, we took the decision to update our renowned Confidex® Home Guarantee in line with the changing face of the construction and housebuilding industries to reflect the sustainable agenda. Through the new ‘solar ready’ Confidex® Home, we’re proud to be a small part of this journey to Net Zero, as well as being the only pre-finished steel manufacturer to offer a standing seam roof and wall system guarantee agreement direct to the homeowner.”

Tata Steel’s Colorcoat® pre-finished steel products are renowned in the industry for their aesthetics, durability and long-lasting performance, in addition to the comprehensive guarantees that come with them.

Toupret has bolstered its Problem Surfaces collection with two versatile flexible products, both addressing substrates where movement can be a problem. These two products further allow professionals to find their perfect filler for repairing unstable surfaces.

Fill-Flex copyFill-Flex is a highly flexible filler for gaps and cracks, perfect for filling the gaps around skirting, architraves and on staircases where movement is possible – its flexible formula moves with the substrate and won’t crack. The filler is suitable for new and renovated surfaces, and it adheres to paintwork with no need to spot prime. Fill-Flex is suitable for both internal and external use. It is available in a 310ml cartridge, for use with an applicator gun, and a 1kg tub.

The second product in this collection of flexible fillers is Skim-Flex, a fine skimcoat that remains flexible when dry, perfect for coating when treating re-appearing cracks or substrates with some movement. It can also be used inside or outside, suitable for damp areas and is breathable. The mixture is extremely adhesive, and it can even be applied over smooth surfaces such as tiles or glass, making it an ideal skim-filling solution for kitchens and bathrooms. It can also be used for light filling up to 5mm and is ready to use straight from the 5kg tub.

The skim-flex product update is part of a major rebrand and product reorganisation for Toupret. The Problem Surfaces collection is now signified with a green colourway offering a striking shelf point of difference.

With the goal of making a great quality filling job simpler and quicker for professionals, Toupret also wanted to make it much easier for tradespeople to choose the best product for any given task. As such, many of the products have been renamed to make their application as clear as possible. However, Toupret knows it has a loyal customer base and so the old product names remain discreetly on the packaging to ensure familiarity for all whilst introducing new simplified product descriptions – for example ‘Fill-Flex’ will appear alongside the historical ‘Fibacryl’ product name.

Both Problem Surfaces flexible products are available to purchase from trade distributors nationwide.

Lifestyle TRV on radiator - girl on floor@0.5xBalancing domestic heating systems just got easier – and faster – with the RAS-B2 Danfoss Dynamic Valve™.  Unlike other TRVs, which only act as flow limiters, this latest addition to the Danfoss TRV family features a differential pressure controller. This ensures that pressure drops over the valve remain at a constant level, so flow through the valve is maintained at both full (winter) and partial (autumn/spring) loads. Additionally, pre-setting of the desired flow is done on the valve, rather than on the lockshield, which it is estimated could save installers up to two hours of valuable working time. Thanks to this innovative product, heating installers can now make sure a system is correctly balanced in a fraction of the time it would normally take.

The new RAS-B2 is specially designed by Danfoss to enable fast and simple hydronic dynamic balancing and to make life even easier this pioneering TRV is also featured on the Danfoss Installer App. Using this time-saving tool, installers can calculate, record and document the correct flow and subsequent setting for each radiator on their smartphone or tablet.

Danfoss-RAS-B2-CO-2Currently the only 100% pressure independent valve demonstrating a constant flow in all conditions, the Danfoss RAS-B2 ensures each radiator receives an equal flow of hot water. As well as optimising end-user comfort, this means that the return temperature is lower (condensing boiler efficiency is best at below a return temperature of 55o C) and the pump can run at a lower speed.

Industry research suggests that between 80% and 90% of heating systems in Europe are unbalanced, which as any heating professional knows can result in the common complaints of noisy radiators and uneven heating.

Summing up, Gareth Ash, Marketing Manager at Danfoss says: “By launching the RAS-B2 Dynamic Valve now Danfoss is offering installers a simple and future-proof solution that will satisfy their customers’ needs today and comply with forthcoming regulations to make existing UK homes more energy efficient as we move towards the ultimate goal of  in 2050.”

The new RAS-B2 Danfoss Dynamic Valve™ is available in a range of convenient radiator packs, including RAS-C2 liquid sensor, and with a choice of 10mm or 15mm fittings to suit different installation requirements.

Integrated solar panels 2 - 540 x 300With the Future Homes Standard still three years away, the immediate focus for the housebuilding sector is the imminent introduction of changes to Part L of the Building Regulations in June this year.

Housebuilders will be looking for the simplest and most cost-effective way to meet the carbon reduction obligations that are fast approaching.

And this is where the specification of renewable energy technology such as effective solar PV on roofscapes can play a central role in helping the sector meet the ambitious targets, set out by government.

The government changes call for a 31% reduction in carbon emissions and all new build homes will need to incorporate low carbon technology solutions – either solar PV, a heat pump or both – to achieve it.

The anticipated emission reduction impact of solar PV prompted trade association Solar Energy UK to predict that upcoming Part L changes will lead to a five-fold increase in the number of new homes built with solar PV.

In the short term, a solar PV system on the roofscape, combined with an efficient gas boiler, appears to be the quickest and easiest way for housebuilders to meet the impending 2022 Part L changes.

Seamless aesthetics

Whilst housebuilders may have concerns about the appearance of bulky, on-roof solar panels, the latest integrated PV roof systems offer a more visually appealing, cost effective, and easier to install option.  Replacing a section of roof tiles, integrated solutions provide a sleek aesthetic and act as a seamless part of the overall roof and can also be installed at the same time as the rest of the roof tiles.

To aid the housebuilding sector to make the most of the potential offered by solar PV, and to better understand the benefits of the technology and how best to utilise it, Marley has developed a free, RIBA-accredited Sustainability and Solar PV CPD, which outlines the different solar options and examines the benefits of integrated versus traditional solar PV systems.

It also provides important advice on the key considerations when specifying a solar system, from aesthetics, planning and energy requirements, to design and installation. To sign up, just visit www.marley.co.uk/cpd/sustainability-and-solar-pv-cpd

  • Eurocell has now proven that significant carbon savings can be achieved from the reuse of post-industrial and post-consumer waste to create new PVC-U solutions
  • Estimates to establish lifecycle impact of using recycled PVC-U window frames independently verified by Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Eurocell’s recycling strategy delivered saving of over 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2021

MicrosoftTeams-image (59)A research whitepaper has supported the positive environmental impact of using recycled waste materials for the manufacture and fabrication of new PVC-U windows and doors.

Existing data sets and modelling have been verified by Manchester Metropolitan University, with the findings set out in The Environmental Impact of Using Post-Consumer PVC-U Waste to Create Today’s Windows and Doors.

The paper estimates the lifecycle environmental impact of creating new recycled PVC-U from post-industrial and post-consumer window frame waste.  The waste comprises of both off-cuts and rejects from the manufacturing process (post-industrial), as well as old frames recovered at their end of their life and destined for landfill (post-consumer). It is also worth considering the impact of BREEAM credits arising from putting steel and aluminium used as reinforcement, back into the circulation.

The study uncovered three key facts:

  1. Significant sustainability savings can be achieved by using recycled waste materials in unseen areas instead of virgin PVC-U on newly fabricated window frames and doors.
  2. Recycling post-consumer waste leads to higher carbon savings thanks to the credits for metals recycling.
  3. Using one tonne of post-consumer PVC-U as part of recycling efforts within a PVC-U manufacturing operation will save 2.056 tonne CO2 equivalent against the use of virgin PVC-U, equivalent to approximately two months’ worth of carbon emissions from the average person in the UK.*

Mark Kelly CEO for Eurocell, comments: “Eurocell is an industry leader producing enough window and door extruded profiles to fabricate over 2.2 million windows and doors annually to meet the demand for high performing, aesthetically pleasing solutions. These design solutions are all focused around recycle content where British Standards allow.

“Like all responsible businesses we have to ensure that our operations are sustainable for the long term and transparent as climate concerns continue to grow.  That is why we set out, with the help of Manchester Metropolitan University, to better understand the impact of our processes, especially around carbon emissions.”

Eurocell operates two recycling plants across the UK.  Each site transforms waste PVC that would otherwise be discarded to landfill into recycled pellet.  This is then extruded using dual material extrusion technology back into its popular new windows and door systems.  Based upon the study’s conclusions, which have been independently assessed and validated by academics at Manchester Metropolitan University, it is calculated that 12,000 plus tonnes of post-consumer waste extruded by the company in 2020 led directly to a saving of over 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by replacing virgin PVC-U with recycled post-consumer PVC-U.

Mark continues: “The study’s conclusions clearly show the positive impact our strategic decision to use waste PVC-U to drive our recycling operations is having. Not only have we significantly cut the carbon emissions that result from our manufacturing processes, the use of recycled materials in our windows and doors enables housebuilders and consumers to make more informed and better environmental choices.

“For instance, housebuilders constructing 2,500 units will save around 627 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year by specifying Eurocell windows and cavity closures with recycled content over full virgin PVC-U windows.

“It is vital that businesses play their part in helping to reverse the current climate emergency.  We are now able to provide our customers, housebuilders, and homeowners with an accurate and verified carbon saving statistic associated with the reuse of waste materials in our manufacturing operations.   This means they can specify and buy with confidence and know their choices are environmentally positive.”

THE UK’S SAFEST RADIATORS

Jaga's Tempo LST Hybrid Radiator for Heating and CoolingLow Surface Temperature (LST) radiators are relied upon to provide safe, high-efficiency heating in places where safety is paramount. They are the go-to choice for facilities such as hospitals and healthcare settings, care and nursing homes, schools and nurseries, prisons and public buildings to prevent vulnerable people from burns and injuries caused by coming into contact with the radiator.

LST radiators work by convecting heat from the emitter, with a small air gap between the emitter and the surface of the radiator casing to prevent the casing ever getting hotter than 43°C.

They are designed with numerous other safety features such as antibacterial coatings, rounded corners and grilles, chamfered front and side panels, casing locks, anti-ligature grilles, pencil-proof grilles and arthritic TRV adaptors. And leading LST manufacturers, such as Jaga, ensure they are designed to conform to the NHS Estates Health Guidance on surface temperature and casing design.

But how are LST radiators keeping up with the times and the demand for high heat output at low flow temperatures?

FUTURE PROOFING FOR LOW CARBON HEAT

Jaga's Tempo LST Hybrid Radiator - Control Panel in Heating ModeJaga’s newest innovation for LST radiators is a key enabler for low carbon heat.

As a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, ecologically sustainable heating, cooling and ventilation systems, Jaga has been at the forefront of the LST radiator market for many years, supplying hundreds of schools and healthcare facilities across the country with safe, powerful, energy-efficient heating.

Jaga's Dynamic Boost Hybrid technology inside the radiator doubles the heat outputTo meet the rapidly increasing demand for higher heat output at lower flow temperatures, Jaga has recently launched a revolutionary innovation for radiators – Dynamic Boost Hybrid (DBH). DBH is an electric booster set that sits inside the LST radiator. It uses small, quiet thermal activators to increase airflow and boost heat output by two to three times without increasing radiator size. It means there’s no need to install large LST radiators when switching to a heat pump system. In fact, they can be even smaller.

This game-changing innovation makes Jaga LST radiators completely future proof. If a building is still being heated by a gas boiler, standard Jaga LST radiators can be installed now, and when the time comes to switch to a heat pump, DBH can easily be retrofitted, enabling the switch over to an emission-free installation at any time without having to make any changes to the radiators, heat distribution or pipes.

WHAT MAKES A HYBRID RADIATOR?

Not only do Jaga’s LST Hybrid radiators provide powerful heat with low energy consumption, they cool too. DBH can automatically switch between heating and light cooling modes, providing the heating system can supply cooling water.

This method of non-condensing cooling is much more environmentally friendly than air conditioning, using less energy and no F-gas, so it’s a perfect solution for a comfortable indoor climate all year round.

Leading riser door and access panel solution supplier, Profab Access, has proven its first-class credentials once again as part of the recent completion of a major specification at Cardiff’s new 5-star Parkgate hotel.

Copy of Profab Risers Doors-28-MV4_5279 (2)Located next to the Welsh Capital’s famous Principality Stadium, the Parkgate hotel has been designed to provide a luxurious experience for rugby fans ahead of the international season, in addition to city dwellers visiting the country all year round. Widely coined as Cardiff’s most lavish new location, the hotel, which will open Autumn 2021, includes 170 guest bedrooms and suites, a signature restaurant and bar, a traditional tea lounge and a rooftop spa overlooking the city skyline.

As part of the prestigious build, a unique collaboration between the Welsh Rugby Union, property developer, Rightacres, and The Celtic Collection, the hotel required an extensive riser door specification, with safety, high performance and aesthetic appeal key considerations.

In total, 310 Profab Access VEGA 1500 Fire Rated Riser Doors were specified for installation by Hazelwood Carpentry throughout every part of the building, including communal areas and the hotel’s vast range of luxury guest rooms and suites.

Copy of Profab Risers Doors-2-MV8_6997 (3)The VEGA 1500 Series Riser Doors offer the highest standards of fire safety, extensively tested by Efectis in France and Ireland to provide a bi-directionally fire tested product that is available in both single and double door configurations.

This means the riser door sets are fire tested from both sides to 60 minutes, providing the specifiers, contractors and hotel guests residing within the building with confidence the critical fire integrity products offer the highest standard and most up to date evidence for fire safety performance.

The range also features a slimline, neat construction, whilst its proven technology ensures permanent, safe access to mechanical and electrical services housed within the riser core. This provides first class functionality and safety, without compromising the overall interior concept.

Jamie Homer, Senior Site Supervisor at Hazelwood Carpentry, said: “As a remarkably impressive build designed to bring a new age of modern luxury to Cardiff’s historic setting, it was important we used the most innovative, highest quality products.

“From the start it was clear that there was no contender to Profab Access and its unrivalled capabilities when it comes to high performance, quality fire rated riser doors.

Copy of Profab Risers Doors-20-MV8_7115 (3)“The Profab Access team recommended the VEGA 1500 Series, which proved a fantastic choice, as it was incredibly easy to install and offers a superb finish, whilst ensuring the highest standard of fire integrity. Plus, being manufactured in the UK ensured quick lead times, which was essential in keeping the project on track for its opening this autumn.

“As usual, the team, who we have worked with many times before, were incredibly helpful and quick to respond to any queries. Needless to say, we look forward to working with Profab Access again on future projects to come.”

In the event of a fire, the VEGA 1500 Series Riser Door sets will maintain the frame and integrity for up to 60 minutes, preventing the spread of fire throughout the property for this period of time.

The riser doors are 31dB acoustic rated, smoke sealed and airtight to Part L, whilst also featuring intumescent smoke seals that enable occupants to safely exit the building. By specifying  bi-directionally fire tested VEGA 1500 Series Riser Doors, the development is actively future proofed as the comprehensive testing certification provides a complete and transparent audit trail of due diligence that evidences the products are not only fit for purpose but meet the duty of care required to ensure legal compliance.

Marcus Parnham, Commercial Director at Profab Access, said: “At a time when the hospitality sector has been subject to so much disruption, the Parkgate hotel will play a key role in attracting rugby fans during the peak international season and revitalising the city’s appeal to visitors looking for the ultimate luxury stay.

“The pedigree of our VEGA 1500 Series fit the brief perfectly. Combining functionality and visual appeal, the specification has enabled great performance without comprising aesthetics. More importantly, the specification of our bi-directionally fire tested line ensures the building features the highest levels of riser shaft fire protection currently available on the Irish and UK markets.”

Profab Access’ diverse portfolio of riser doors and access panels are supported by a wide range of BIM Level 2 and CAD files to aid the specification process and streamline the initial design stages.
